By definition, an India Pale Ale is hoppier and higher in alcohol than its little brother, pale ale-and we deliver in spades. Now one of the most well respected and best-selling IPAs in the country, this golden beauty explodes with citrusy flavor and hop aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character. This crisp, extra hoppy brew is hugely refreshing on a hot day, but will always deliver no matter when you choose to drink it.

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2006 Huge hop aroma. Floral and citrus all over the place. Flavor is pretty much the same. Just hops and hops and hops. Of course, plenty of hop bitterness. The only thing lacking is the malt. No "malt backbone" to provide a foundation for the hops to rest on. This lets them really run wild, but makes the beer a bit too much to handle. Its almost like eating a whole lot of BBQ sauce on too few ribs. Its tasty, but needs more. I know Stone prides themselves on going overboard, and they managed to do exactly that right here. Pretty good, but not great.

Bottle sampled with The Mad Indian at his house. Pours golden\copper with a decent size off-white head. Aroma of pine and citrusy hops. The flavor is slightly sweet, citrus, and moderate bitterness. The alcohol is masked very well, good balanced brew. Good body, great brew.

On tap: Appeared classic cloudy amber with nice lacing and head. Expected hoppy notes, very crisp aroma. Starts off with the fruity punch, followed by the hopping senstion. Dry hopped for sure, this is one of the most crisp ipas ive had. Perfectly bitter. Dangerous., but good

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2006 12 oz bottle shared with StompBrockmore - Pours a light honey colour. Decent head, but that went fairly fast. Aroma - WOW. Huge citusy-sweet hops that got me all excited-like. So, I was ready.....and then.......nothing. Well, something, but not much. There is a strange sweetness to the beer, and after that huge hop aroma, the flavour is kind of tame. Drinkable, sure - but given the amount of seriously great American IPAs around, I probably would be in no hurry to grab this one again. Being Stone, the stakes were high, but I was slightly let down by this one - probably a result of a few things - super high expectations, the grandiose claims on the back of the bottle, and having this back to back with the Smuttynose IPA, which made this one seem a little......washed out.

This is by far the best IPA Ive tried. The hop flavor is big and bold. The scent alone keeps me sippin it! Im not a huge IPA fan, but I will buy this beer again.

Pours an opaque amber-orange with a rocky off-white head that fades to a cap. Aroma is surprisingly balanced: grapefruit and pine resin are kept in check by a strong malt presence that lends sweetness. Same cannot be said for the taste: slight alcohol hit, but tons of grapefruit, pine, a bit soapy but not distractingly so. Not surprising for Stone to turn out a hop bomb here. Long and lasting bitter finish. Not exactly balanced ...might even be more malt presence in the Arrogant Bastard. Good none the less - aggressively hopped and bitter, even for an IPA.

Bottle. Pours a clear bright copper with a lacy white head. Aroma of pine and grass with a tiny trace of skunk - the hoppy variety, not the lightstruck variety. Light to medium with medium carbonation. Taste starts sweet with bread and fruit followed by a mostly piney finish and a resinous aftertaste. A smooth and refreshing IPA.

UPDATED: SEP 25, 2007 The pour is a tanned shade of golden yellow with a good rocky head. Butterscotch, lemon and pine aromas hint at the perfect balance this brew strikes: juicy peach, grapefruit and cool leafy bitterness give way to a smooth caramel sweet finish. A flawlessly rounded rendition, to be sure. If it had a bit more of a gritty bitter edge it would be unforgettable.

Updated. On tap at the Dominion Brewhouse. Aroma is fairly dull with mild flowers and sour citrus. Tastes of white rice with honey and a touch of soy, some oyster crackers and salt. Strange. Overly smooth in the mouth and somewhat lifeless. Its either the bottom of the barrel or a dirty line, but this one was done in.

Poured lighter than I would have expected. Hazy macro color. On the virge of a white. Nice white head that died down but provided nice lacing. Centennial hops in the aroma. Sort of thin watery mouthfeel with plenty of hop flavor and bitterness. I agree with other people that I probably like this more than Ruination.

UPDATED: OCT 28, 2008 Hazy orange with a tight white head. Very woody, piny aroma. Massive hoppy character, mostly resinous and woody, slightly floral, but not very fruity at all. Pale biscuity malt takes a backseat. Very bitter finish. I like my IPAs with a little more fruit and a little more sweet malt character. Still very good though.
