Bomber, 2013 vintage. Bright fruity aroma with notes of floral, smoke, wood and spicy yeast. Pours cloudy golden colored with a finger of off white head that has excellent retention and lacing. Starts with bright cherry fruit and floral flavors with a lively mouthfeel. Finishes dry with spicy Belgian yeast and great wood smoke flavors. UPDATED: AUG 8, 2017 Bomber bought by Craftmember at the Oedipus brewery in Amsterdam, thanks for sharing Vincent! A tribute to a late Stone employee, see the whole story above. Weird concept: "imperial cherry wood smoked saison" - I was eager to find out what this is supposed to be... Lacing, creamy, dense, snow white, very moussy and fairly stable head over a hazy orangey blonde beer with vague salmon pinkish tinge. Aroma of peaches drenched in liquor, crêpe Suzette, carrot cake, sugarloaf, Grand Marnier, apricot jam, vanilla beans, subtle smoked bacon, moist cigarette tobacco, overripe pear, sugared yoghurt, caramel, some glue-like solvents, white rum. Candied sweet onset, marmelade and yellow raisin notes but countered by a soft and discreet, yet effective ’underground’ sourishness running through the whole like a dash of citrus fruit juice; medium carbonation, soft and notably creamy, ’filling’ but still supple and lean body. Residual sugars surf on top of a smooth caramelly malt sweet core with that orange flesh-like flavour persisting till the end but subtly so; a touch of smoked meat shows up late and very briefly, but the whole beer remains centered around this dessert- and candied orange-like sweetness, though in the end balanced by a beautifully positioned tannic dryness from the cherrywood - indeed without that vanilla-ish factor associated with oak. A spicy and earthy, yet ’friendly’ hop bitterishness ensues, along with an afterglow of warming, brandy-like alcohol. Stone has done pretty astonishing things throughout its existence and not all of their more experimental beers, which this one very clearly belongs to, have been great successes for me; I can easily imagine how a ’weirdo’ like this would divide opinions and then it all comes down to personal taste. In my personal taste, this desserty, original, layered beer fits very well I must say - I hugely enjoyed the discovery of cherrywood, for one thing, indeed tasting a bit different than the oak we have all grown accustomed to by now. Very interesting barleywine-ish but not so much ’smoked’ - and, as expected, as much a ’saison’ as Budweiser is an imperial stout.

March 21, 2014 - with blankboy, gregclow, mabel and jercraigs - bomber. Mostly clear bright brassy amber-gold with a tiny white head. Smells like a smoked golden ale all right - floral with definite alcohol presence. Taste is smokey and a little fruity/floral. Slick mouthfeel, mild carbonation, dry campfire finish - pretty solid. Matt’s Burning Rosid’s is odd, even for a Stone creation, and it’s something I’ve never had before: a Smoked Saison. (I guess?) Somehow it’s got a strange charm that makes the whole damn think work somehow. Hazy orange pour. Smoky, woodsy, fruity, yeasty, earthy, and spicy notes. Minus the "smoky" and "woodsy" those are all pretty typical Saison descriptors. Yet, those added elements do contribute a certain campfire quality to this brew’s inherent barnyard smells and flavors. I realize that description doesn’t really sound like something appetizing (barnyard + campfire?) but I guess you’ll have to take my word for it.
