The Winking Lizard Blend, which was designed by The Winking Lizard Tavern operating partner John Lane for the Ohio restaurant chain of the same name, and crafted in a blending session with Lane, GK, Stone President and Co-founder Steve Wagner, Bremaster Mitch Steele and the aforementioned Moynier. It’s a blend of Stone Cali-Belgique IPA, unreleased Stone Belgian Pale Ale aged in White Wine Barrels and Stone LeVariation Ale (Stone Levitation Ale fermented with the yeast strand utilized for our Belgian IPA, Stone Cali-Belgique IPA) aged in Red Wine Barrels that’s been dry-hopped with East Kent Golding Hops. (Whew!) Coming in around 8% ABV, it’s immensely fruity from the vino and Belgian yeast esters, and built as something of an “homage” to the Belgian Trappist classic, Orval. This beer will be featured at The Winking Lizard Tavern locations the entire month of June along with numerous other Stone beers.

Growler. Clear dark golden with a fizzy white head. Grape, grapefruit, caramel, and wine barrel aroma. Silky, bright medium bodied palate. Tastes of pear, orange, grape, grapefruit, caramel, wine, and subtle oak with a fruity, perfume like, vinous finish. Very good.

16oz pint at Lucky Pie LoDo. Big pine nose, soap, spruce, orange pith. Flavor is bitter orange, lemon, grapefruit, soap, herbs. Bracing finish.

On tap @ Lucky Pie. Pours a copper color with an off-white head. Wood, apple, and sweet toast on the nose. Some water, grass, a touch of metal, and citrus peel. Flavor is kind of bitter. Water, metal, citrus peel, and toast. Lots of apple and cider notes. Lemony finish. Kind of tart.

On tap @ Lucky Pie. Pours a dark orange appearance with a tan head. Spicy floral yeasty, orange blossom, slightly goopy sweet aroma. Slightly spicy, grassy, tangy, lemon citrusy, sweet toasted malty flavor. Eh.

I really liked this beer. The barrel aging was very apparent in the aroma. The flavor was very fruity and almost tangy. I don’t think this is properly listed in the IPA’s. very little IPA character. A bit sweet almost. Nice unique beer.

Hard to sort out. Aroma is heavy artificial banana, like cheap candy. Flavor has some dark sugar, a little funk, sweet. Some candied orange peel in there. Honestly not sure what they are going for. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Jerry’s. Copper with creamy, off-white head, good lacing / Bright nose of candied citrus, soap, burnt sugar, perfume / Light to medium body, a hint thin, soft carbonation, moderately sweet with good bitterness / Flavors of turning orange rind, lemon, pine, soap, burnt sugar / Light and gentle, interesting, but no Belgian character that I can detect. Might have to try this again.

alexsdad06 (10430) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - SEP 7, 2013
Draft at Cork n Bottle a few weeks back. Pours a clear dark golden color with a small white head that collapses to a thin film. The aroma was lighter, but had citrus, yeast, wine barrel notes and sweet malts. The flavor did show the Cali-Belgique character with definite barrel notes; sweet malts, yeast, citrus, tart wine notes, wood with mild plus bitterness to the finish.

Tap at tremont house. Copper with ring. Mild aroma caramel and yeast. Fruity apple tartness with toasted caramel tart caramel sweet fruity finish. Bleh. Wish I ordered something else.

BMMillsy (1788) - Florida, USA - AUG 31, 2013
Draft at WOB Gainesville. Pours a clear dark copper with pretty one finger white creamy head. Aroma of big wine barrel, oak, sweet fruits. Flavor follows with a big white wine presence, Oakes Chardonnay, more oak, light pear and white grape. Lingering oak on the palate. Slick mouthfeel with low to medium carbonation. Interesting beer.
