When our illustrious brewing team spiked a few barrels of the Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine with our Belgian yeast strain last year, we absolutely loved it. So much, in fact, that we knew we needed an excuse to make more. So, in our unending quest to constantly challenge the status quo (even our own), we came up with Odd Beers for Odd Years, a program to release odd beers – e.g. Stone Old Guardian BELGO Barley Wine – in odd years (2011, 2013, 2015…). It was met with a bit of resistance (to say the least) since we weren’t originally offering the traditional Old Guardian alongside it, but we’ve mended our ways and decided to make both. You’re welcome.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2017 Vom Fass Stone Brewing Berlin 2016-10 getrunken.

Barley notes and slightly complex. Nothing too special or distinguishing to note.

A crazy clear Amber orange red color with a rich poignant sharp hoppy aroma. Medium to light bodied and very dry with lots of raisin+plum, malt and a sharp boozy finish. Nice but not so belgian. 3.6/7

2011 Vintage, Sampled from tap at Stone Garden Berlin. Hazy amber color with big eggshell head. Aroma is toffee, slightly oxidized, some fresh yeast, resinous, piney, dark fruits. Taste is more toffee, piney, sticky, slightly oxidized. Oily mouthfeel. Very good!

Schweres sehr fassig wirkendes Barley Wine Freudenfest. Säure und trockene Rotfuchtflavours gehen eine heilvolle Allianz ein. Besonders der späte Trunk fängt den Komplexiwurm. 0,15/3,30€ vom Fass in der STONE BREWERY Berlin.

Drank with Marijn, Bram and Lennart in the Stone brewery bar (awesome place!) in Berlin. Fine beer, sharp taste with lots of alcohol in the taste. Not that sweet. Belgian hop taste. More like an English barley wine.

From a 22 oz bottle. Vintage 2011 courtesy of Ryan. Pours a clear amber with an off white head. Flavors of caramel. Sweet, but mellow finish.

Bomber bought @ Systembolaget five years ago. Pours hazy reddish brown with a small offwhite head that doesn’t leave much trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and piney with caramel, toffee, sweet dark bread, while grapefruit a, caramelised apples, pine needles, resin, minerals, alcohol and lemon zest. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty, resinous, dusty and tiny fruity. Mouthfeel is soft, sticky, tiny oily, astringent, boozy and near full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with caramel, toffee, sweet dark bread, grapefruit, tangerines, apples, pears, pine needles, resin, moist soil, alcohol and lemon zest. Big and heavy. Oxidised with both dark fruit and cardboard notes. Light belgo notes. Quite enjoyable...

650 ml bottle at Mackan, thanks! Amber with off white head. Aroma complex, sugar, toffee, malt, yeasty esters, woody notes and alcohol. Taste is similar, complex, fairly sweet, malty, sugar, wood and yeast in nice harmony. Really nice!

Complete miss for me. From first sip to the after taste bitter throughout Somewhere in the middle i think there was a slight sweetness but it quickly receded into the bitterness. Not smooth at all and this was not due to the alcohol content... if anything positive is to be found it is that the alcohol % is masked well.
