When our illustrious brewing team spiked a few barrels of the Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine with our Belgian yeast strain last year, we absolutely loved it. So much, in fact, that we knew we needed an excuse to make more. So, in our unending quest to constantly challenge the status quo (even our own), we came up with Odd Beers for Odd Years, a program to release odd beers – e.g. Stone Old Guardian BELGO Barley Wine – in odd years (2011, 2013, 2015…). It was met with a bit of resistance (to say the least) since we weren’t originally offering the traditional Old Guardian alongside it, but we’ve mended our ways and decided to make both. You’re welcome.

Bottle. Amber with no head. Fruity and malty tones. Fruit, malt, caramel and hops. Full body with a very nice, bitter sweet after taste.

kidobutai (698) - Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA - MAR 22, 2015
Poured from a bottle. Crazy experiment. Was rating this at one house. Not crazy about it. Went to another house and finished while eating a spicy homemade Chili. The taste improved dramatically. Like a Bourbon stout, strangely.

roxtersoxter (358) - McKinney, Texas, USA - FEB 11, 2015
Pours copper with large tan head on tap. Aroma of herbs, malt, and hops. Flavor of thick malt and hops with sticky finish. Good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

HeadyDE (868) - Delaware, USA - DEC 13, 2014
2011 bottle..medium caramel brown color with 1/2 finger cream color tan head that manages to stick around throughout..nose is a bit muted with honey..sweet malt..caramel..taste is subdued at first for the high abv, in fact quite smooth on initial sip that molds into a medium-full bodied presence that warms the palate...sticky sweetness..not hot yet bold character..fruity esters come aboard from the belgian yeast that give this barleywine some character for sure..quite enjoyable and will be seeking out more of this if released in 2015..

Beerdedone (3446) - Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 28, 2014
Bottle. Pours amber with a one finger off-white head. Aroma of belgian yeast, caramel, dark fruit, toffee and raisins. Flavor of caramel, dark fruit, yeast, toffee, orange and had notes of spices. Slick texture, full bodied, low carbonation.

slowrunner77 (12594) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 1, 2014
"12% big boy, same as the classic 2011 version. lots of sweetish fruit esters, yeasty spice and earthiness. dry and malty. not a lot of hops coming through other than some back end bitterness, but the hoppage in the classic is toned down this year as well. very nice, glad i have more."

ReverendMoon (155) - Illinois, USA - SEP 4, 2014
A little on the bitter end, which shouldn't be a big surprise coming from stone. Just not loving it as I hoped I might. Still, a decent representation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
