Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, its officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was Belgianized. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

Bomber. Bit of a medicinal aroma. Doesnt smell at all like a Barleywine. Dark reddish brown body; hazy, with very little lace. Chewy palate like a Barleywine, very strong, rich, sweet. Smoke is evident although somewhat overshadowed by everything else going on. Still, a nice smoke in the finish and a nice brief hoppyness about mid-tongue. Excellent.

Burnt copper color. Superior carbonation. Willowy foam head lasts indefinitely. Aroma is light.smoke and woodiness. Taste is oak, smoke and caramel. Finish is deliciously stark bitter.

22oz bottle from Binnys Lincoln Park. Pours a deep brown colored body with a slight orange hue. Finger-width, dense, creamy and frothy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is woody with a medium sweet caramel and a good amount of smoke. Leathery, peppery, and a bit estery with some dark fruits and a few piney hops. Flavor is similar. Caramel, piney hops and citruses, leathery smoke, and wood. A few dark fruit notes, some toffee, and pepper before this finishes dry and bitter. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-full body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, an interesting barley wine with a lot of things going on. Dry and bitter with a good amount of wood, leather, smoke, piney hops, citruses, and sweeter caramels. Not bad.

Golden pour thick off white head thick lacing. Aroma of oak lots and lots of caramel a touch of smoked meat. Full well coated slightly creamy palate. Good caramel a bit of pine and a hint of salt along with a light smoke. Well balanced maintains the OG taste with a subtle touch of smoked meats. Enjoyable.

Tap. Pours a dark amber/ruby color with a white, sticky head. Lots of lacing. Aroma was all smoke and bbq pit and nothing else. Where is the Old Guardian aroma? Taste started out with some sweetness and fruitiness then into smoke. I really enjoyed this part. Immediately following the smoke was a horrible bitter, chemical taste. I really enjoy regular Old Guardian but this was no good. This was good at first but as it warmed it became incredibly hard to finish. Id be interested to see what a bottle tastes like and re-rate.

Not much aroma to speak of. Taste is nice full-bodied Belgian abbey style ale. Very thick, very sweet. Masks the intense strength.

This one is somewhat smokey on the nose, but just slightly. Pours a filtered amber with fleeting head. Taste is very malty with a good bit of sweetness that is cut by a subtle but present bitterness. The finish is slightly smokey and dry. Sort of expected more smokiness, but overall its a interesting pour.

22 bottle from CountyWide. Dark amber with chill haze, ring and lace. Smoke, vanilla, fresh bread and caramel aroma with a hint of alcohol. Mild fruity sweet caramel ripe plum with assertive bitter dry finish with some ashy smoke. Active carbo causes mild astringency in the finish. Will recede with age I think. Medium Full body. Excellent. Cant believe its 12% (after all Ive had already. Yikes). Bravo!
