Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

Bomber to snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Looks good; a transparent amberish-brown with sticky off-white lacing. Smells and tastes just like the name suggests: sweet, smoky, and oaky. Good on the palate. An enjoyable variation of the base.

Jesterdeal (1986) - Marlton, New Jersey, USA - MAR 14, 2013
Aroma of smoked meat, a little bug spray, and vanilla oak. Pours red and clear with a nice medium head. Taste is sweet with hickory, smoke, sweet butterscotch, and a pine hop. Very smoke filled and a little distracting. Warms up nicely.

Daytonbeer (729) - Ohio, USA - MAR 13, 2013
Pours brown with red hue and off white head. Aroma of herbs, licorice, alcohol, and some smoke. Taste is dark fruit, malts, smoke, and bitterness on the back end. Very complex and different.

650 ml Bottle of 2013 Vintage. Smokey taste that overpowers a little. Pours a reddy brown with frothy head that quickly dissipates.

ElGaucho (2401) - Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA - MAR 13, 2013
Bomber. Bit of a medicinal aroma. Doesn’t smell at all like a Barleywine. Dark reddish brown body; hazy, with very little lace. Chewy palate like a Barleywine, very strong, rich, sweet. Smoke is evident although somewhat overshadowed by everything else going on. Still, a nice smoke in the finish and a nice brief hoppyness about mid-tongue. Excellent.

Burnt copper color. Superior carbonation. Willowy foam head lasts indefinitely. Aroma is light.smoke and woodiness. Taste is oak, smoke and caramel. Finish is deliciously stark bitter.

Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - MAR 12, 2013
22oz bottle from Binny’s Lincoln Park. Pours a deep brown colored body with a slight orange hue. Finger-width, dense, creamy and frothy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is woody with a medium sweet caramel and a good amount of smoke. Leathery, peppery, and a bit estery with some dark fruits and a few piney hops. Flavor is similar. Caramel, piney hops and citruses, leathery smoke, and wood. A few dark fruit notes, some toffee, and pepper before this finishes dry and bitter. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-full body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, an interesting barley wine with a lot of things going on. Dry and bitter with a good amount of wood, leather, smoke, piney hops, citruses, and sweeter caramels. Not bad.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a dark cream head. Smoke and malt aroma with light caramel. Nice smokey flavor with malt, light earth, and light caramel. Medium bodied. Smoke and earth linger with ight caramel, and light darker malts.

MIBRomeo (2579) - Wisconsin, USA - MAR 12, 2013
Golden pour thick off white head thick lacing. Aroma of oak lots and lots of caramel a touch of smoked meat. Full well coated slightly creamy palate. Good caramel a bit of pine and a hint of salt along with a light smoke. Well balanced maintains the OG taste with a subtle touch of smoked meats. Enjoyable.

Tap. Pours a dark amber/ruby color with a white, sticky head. Lots of lacing. Aroma was all smoke and bbq pit and nothing else. Where is the Old Guardian aroma? Taste started out with some sweetness and fruitiness then into smoke. I really enjoyed this part. Immediately following the smoke was a horrible bitter, chemical taste. I really enjoy regular Old Guardian but this was no good. This was good at first but as it warmed it became incredibly hard to finish. I’d be interested to see what a bottle tastes like and re-rate.
