Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

arojewski (72) - Old Bridge, New Jersey, USA - MAR 5, 2013
Pours a deep honey brown with tints of red. Nice smoked aroma, which belies the bite waiting for one’s palate. Definitely an unmistakable barley-wine.

egajdzis (6830) - Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 5, 2017
Reddish brown color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Pine, citrus, smoke, caramel, dark fruits, light alcohol.

dnstone (3707) - Kansas City, Missouri, USA - MAY 13, 2017
Pours a murky hazed copper color with a soft white head. Scotch like smoked aroma. Well balanced malty with an bitter earthy smoked overtone. Notes: 2013 vintage on tap at Aces & Ales (Tenaya) Stone Domination event, May ’17

Bulk_Carrier (6064) - Vermont, USA - MAR 19, 2017
Poured into a snifter, the appearance was a semi-clear amber color with a nice looking off white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Mild lace. The aroma takes the "Old Guardian" form and adds some wood, smoke and peat. Hops seem to have a bit more abrasion here with citrus, resin and grassiness than regular "Old Guardian." The flavor leads with a nice smooth sweet blend of malts to hops; sweet, dry and bitter. Blends nicely into the aftertaste riding into the finish the same way. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a good sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt good with the ABV feeling like it’s on par. Overall, nice variant of "Old Guardian," good job Stone.

Flaska beställd från SB. Mörkt rödbrun med beige skum. Söt och kraftig doft med vanilj, bourbon, torkad frukt och fat. Bränd och rökig, med kola och torkad frukt.

22 oz. bottle notes from notes. Pours a clear amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have big wood and peat character over the sweet caramel, dark fruit notes, resin and citrus hop character of the base beer, tobacco, berries, dry, another solid treatment of their American barley wine, the alcohol remains well integrated into the beer, solid enough.

Singularity (6369) - Blattniksele, SWEDEN - OCT 16, 2016
650 ml bottle at home, vintage 2013. Amber with off white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, crisp smokey, burnt wood, smoked meats, toffee, dark sugar and alcohol. Taste is similar, malty, smokey bordering peated, dark caramel, toffee, sugar and alcohol. Complex and pleasant.

Svesse (8972) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - OCT 15, 2016
(Bottle) Dark reddish amber colour with dense, beige head. Malty, slightly smoky nose with notes of caramel, dried fruit, a touch of resin, some smoked ham, chocolate, vanilla and a touch of burnt rubber. Malty, hoppy, smoky taste with caramel, dried fruit, smoke, oak wood, honey, chocolate, vanilla and a vinous finish with a generous resiny bitterness and peppery alcohol. Full body, quite sweet. Not really subtle or balanced, but really tasty and quite powerful. Very nice.

Tide (4566) - Helsinki, FINLAND - SEP 21, 2016
Bottle at Brewdog. Dark copper color, white head. Bitter taste with citrus, hops, caramel, oak, smoke, toffee, pine and a bit of resin. Bitter finish with citrus, caramel, hops, resin, pine, oak and smoke. Excellent barley wine.

GenDV138 (7899) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - SEP 11, 2016
22 oz bottle poured into a tulip. 2013 bottle. Clear ruby with beige head. Aromas of smoke, toasted wood, caramel, malt, oak. Tastes of light smoke, malt, caramel, oak, light booze. Medium body with a dry finish.

Oakes (19426) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 29, 2016
Has some protein in suspension. Amber. Thin head. Aroma mostly shows the chewy malt. Sweet, lightly chewy and only vaguely smoky. Long finish with the age rounding out both smoke and hop.
