COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

Light haze on this deep red - amber beer. Good pale cream coloured head. Palate is soft and slightly viscous with fine minerally carbonation. Smooth creamy malt, mild smoke. Slight bitterness. Good bitterish marmalade hops bring up the rear. Smooth finish with a spicy bitter linger.

Draft courtesy of craftycarl21, thank you sir! Clear golden color, fluffy white head. Aroma of subtle smouldering straw and stone fruit. Taste is meaty with a softly burning edge, thick and heavy mouthfeel. Interesting, almost chewy.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Clear copper/brown, small head. Smoky caramelly nose. Mid sweet with full body and slick, rounded mouthfeel. Caramel and oak, intense peppery alcohol that lingers in a really bitter finish.

Bottle at Bruce’s - London. Lightly hazy amber-ruby with a moderate, frothy off-white head. Looks great. Some smoked ham in the nose, honey, rich bread. Medium to big sweet flavor, bubblegum, candied ham, some bitter earth, sweet bread. Full bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Warming finish, lightly astringent, more candied ham, rich bread, some ripe fruits. Heavy duty stuff. Pretty tasty.

Tap at the Hay Merchant, Houston, 21/05/13. Dark amber with a good sized off white head. Nose is dark fruits, toffee, dates, light boozey oak, hint of smoke. Taste comprises dark fruits, woody notes, booze, smoked wood, dates, tobacco, prunes, sugars. Full bodied, fine carbonation, boozey finish. Good stuff but this version didn’t add anything to the overall quality of the base beer. Booze present throughout but well integrated for the ABV. Solid barley wine.
