Pours out light red with creamy foam. Smells sweet and piney. Taste is sweet malt upfront with lots of bitter hops to finish. Thick and complex, but good balance. Pretty strong now but will mellow with age. Tasty brew. vlan1 (220) - Austin, Texas, USA - FEB 1, 2014

Nose is toffee and caramel. Taste follows the same notes. Very little hop presence but this is likely due to the aging. Very sweet and smooth. Delicious.
Pours a clear dark red-brown with a large pale yellow-brown head. Strong aroma of malts, fruit, butterscotch, caramel, and nuts. Some hops too. Strong hoppy bitter taste with a lovely alcohol burn. Sweet, sugary aftertaste with a very nice smooth finish. The body could be thicker and less agressive on the hops, but otherwise perfect. Shaftie (218) - , Maryland, USA - JUN 27, 2010
Sipped in small portions, okay, drink the 22, I think not. Stupid hoppy. Just kicks you right in the mouth. You should probably wear a helmet. mcclainc50 (217) - New York, USA - MAY 15, 2014
Pours a nice amber color with a nice white head. Notes of the grains and a fruity note with pine in the background. Sharp taste in the middle that is almost metallic, but it’s surrounded with fruit I the front and a nice malty aftertaste. Very good barleywine.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2007 Copper with a medium, persistant, pale yellow head and coarse lace. Very heavy mouth feel and strong alcohol taste with a trace of burn afterwards. Shades of cotton candy (!) and whiskey, without any yeastiness. Hops are present, but not anywhere near the levels of, for example, Bigfoot. FlagstoneHill (215) - Erie, Colorado, USA - OCT 28, 2007
Bomber - thanks Josh. Clear amber with a light white head.. .. Big malty aroma with some hints of hops. .. Very bitter flavor, especially in the finish. Malty, carmelly to lend a little balance. .. Medium body, light carbonation. .. Very nice Barleywine -smooth in spite of the bitterness. MaliMisho (215) - East Meadow, New York, USA - APR 22, 2008
It had an amber body and a taste of fruity alcohol with a bit of bitterness. KariCupcake (214) - Lenox, Massachusetts, USA - JUL 16, 2005
I sipped some of this from my fiance’s glass. It has a really nice dark red color and only a trace of foam, limited to the edges of the glass. This beer smells and tastes like a horse. Not the shiningly clean show-horse variety, but the smelly, dirty, unkempt ones that are always swatting away flies. That kind of horse. Tybalt (212) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - MAY 12, 2006
Very good. I don’t drink barley wines much, so I was expecting it to be very, very strong...but it was suprisingly smooth and easy to casually drink. Despite the other posts here, I think it hides its high alcohol content very well. It’s only drawback?...you can’t drink a lot of it and still remember what you did that night.
