Bottle 2007. My first attempt at aging. Pours clear amber with moderate off white head. Aroma is caramel sweetness with floral hops and grapefruit. The hops have mellowed nicely. The first flavor is caramel/port wine with raisins and plum. Very sweet and palatable. The hops come through at the back with a strong bite which mellows as you drink. Alcohol is well hidden. I was nervous that this wasn’t going to make it a year in less than ideal aging conditions, but it was great. truegen (167) - Puyallup, Washington, USA - FEB 2, 2008
22 oz. Bomber from 99 Bottles in Federal Way. Pure copper color topped with an active head that dissipates quickly, but leaves copious lace. Sweet on the tip of the tongue, but hits the hops and alcohol toward the back end. Understated hops for a Stone product, but nicely done. I’m hoping this will be on tap at The Parkway in Tacoma for their annual barleywine event. I’m aiming to cellar some of this too. redave (166) - squaw valley, California, USA - MAR 10, 2009
Love this stuff!
Pours a rather cloudy orange with a rather thin head and practically no lace.
First sip was sorta malty and i at first thought mellow...
Whew what happens! the bite comes on!
Its great! but it’s a build up.
It’s like the bitterness layers on your tongue and sticks around or something
one of the best barley wines around! Bitter style! posikyle (165) - Alabama, USA - FEB 15, 2008
2008 bottle. Aroma is very malty. Pours a reddish brown color, almost like rust. Starts off a bit sweet, gets maltier in the middle and has a big hoppy finish. A very good barley wine. natedoggkc (164) - Overland Park, Kansas, USA - AUG 11, 2008
Early 2008 release. Pours a nice, mostly transparent red with a medium off white head. A nice aroma that is full of malt and some hops and honey. Lots of hops and some malt and got some honey on the taste too. Pretty good.

2013 vintage. Nearly a half inch of sediment on the bottom. Nose was surprisingly light for such a beefy beer. Color is an interesting cloudy copper. Taste is heavy with malt and hop, and plenty of alcohol. Quite sweet up front with a typically bitter Stone finish. Interesting mix for sure.

pours golden brown with a large off white head. aroma is fruity apples mostly, and hoppy, with pine needles. flavor is hoppy, and of grapefruit with a strong alcohol flavor. this beer is strong though not sticky like many other barley wines. however I prefer the previous old guardians to this one. maybe aging will do this one well. hippie4beer (162) - Indianapolis, Indiana, USA - MAR 21, 2006
Bottle. 2006. Pours a light amber/orange color with a quick fading white head. Aroma is lightly fruity with a mixture of alcohol. There are notes of prunes, syrup, and light bready aromas. Flavor is very malty and sweet, alcohol is pretty well hidden here. Finish is lasting and smokey. There are notes of carmelized sugars, caramel, and a slight vineous flavor. slightly bittering. Mouthfeel is huge and chewey. This beer was to celebrate my first teaching job!! I would like to see this one smooth out in a few years. cherr (162) - Rochester, New York, USA - APR 23, 2004
This is an excellent beer. The color is brown with a nice head. The beer is very full. The taste is initially of nice malt similar to their IPAs. The finish is nice and hoppy. Overall excellent beer. Not overwhelming like some barley wines. jameswolfe (160) - Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA - APR 6, 2009
I really like barley wne, but one thing that can let me down with a beer is too much alcohol taste. IMO, it ruins the flavor. This is a good beer that could have been a great beer.
