This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer theyd ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangsters skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

Pours a nice copper color with a sturdy head. Smells promising - strong fruity/resinous hop aromas mixed with coconut. The combo almost creates an apricot type smell, pretty nice. Aaaand then I drink it - this stuff is boozy and very bitter. The creamy sweet vanilla coconut flavors don't exactly marry that well with these super bitter resinous hops. Maybe I should have sat on this one for a couple of weeks to let it die down a little? Bitter finish. Nice body/mouthfeel. It gets better the more I sip on it but overall, this one's just not for me.

22oz bomber. Pours a clear golden color with a huge fluffy off white head. Aroma of citrus and tropical fruit, a little boozy, and subtle hints of coconut. Taste is real bitter and resinous, lots of citrus and grapefruit, with a strong sappy pine aftertaste. Unfortunately not getting any coconut in the flavor. Solid IPA nonetheless.

Bomber poured a clear tarnished gold with a lasting ivory head. Aromas of coconut, bread, mango, peach, passion fruit and melon. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of bread, coconut, light tropical fruit and light citrus with a smooth dry lightly bitter coconut finish.

Draft - Orange, passion fruit and a bit of pine. Clear gold and a thin white head. Nice bitter IPA with a bit of fruit and grapefruit and the coconut adds a nice upper palate sweetness. Coconut is subtle but you get the roast, and finish is the standard Stone IPA.

Subtile unsweetened coconut. A bit of tropical fruit hops. Better in theory. Finish tastes like licking the outside of a coconut. Not as good as i was expecting.

650 ml bottle from bev4less. Pours a translucent new penny copper color with a small white head that recedes to a film. The aroma is soft and mild with a light citrus scent. The taste is decent bitter grapefruit hops set in a neutral malt base. I dont get much in the way of coconut, it must be very subtle. The palate is full and smooth with lively carbonation. The finish is long and dry with lingering grapefruit. Overall: A decent summer IPA, loved it.

Bottle shared by a coworker. Pours a golden to yellow with white head. Aroma is more tropical and bitter than any coconut. Really none until this one warms significantly. Taste is again bitter and resinous with some bitter unripe tropical fruit. The coconut is not there at all when it is cold. As it warms you get a roasted coconut like mounds bar thing going on. Nothing special.
