This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Pours a hazy amber with a thin, quickly fading head. Little lace. Aroma is mix of dank and floral. Not much coconut to speak of. Some malt sweetness. Bitter hops hit the tongue first, followed by citrus and pine. Again, not much coconut flavor. Finishes immensely bitter, as one would expect from Stone. Medium bodied with decent carbonation for an IPA, slight astringency on the tongue on finish. Overall, a decent IPA, but if this were a blind tasting, I'd be hard pressed to call this a coconut IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

November 29, 2013 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs & mabel - bomber. Sounds weird, but here goes. Mostly clear orange-gold with an average lasting beige head. Oily, somewhat resin aroma, some alcohol - no coconut! Taste - follows, a bit of mineral, more bitterness which builds to grapefruit pith; maybe a little coconut on the fringe - maybe the coconut is adding the odd oily character to the malt; alcohol asserts itself some. Thick, astringent, mild carbonation with a long, building pithy palate-coating finish. Not sure I see what the coconut was adding, but a solid IPA.

Pours a hazy, dark golden yellow color with golden banana hues when held to a light source and a 1.5 finger, frothy white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Juicy tropical fruit aroma with citrus peel, light malts and dank, earthy hops. Lots of mango and grapefruit and apple along with lemon peel, biscuit and resinous grass. Coconut presence is subtle with kind of a tropical suntan lotion character in the nose. The coconut is definitely present in the aroma but it doesn’t dominate or overpower the other elements. Medium body wih a blast of dank, earthy hops that linger over the sweetness and pale malt backbone into a very dry finish. More earthy, bitter and resinous than expected with less of a tropical/citrus fruit presence than the nose suggests. Nice dryness with lots of grassy pine needle and spruce tip along with some faint onion-y summit flavor. Citrus sweetness with lemon and orangepeel notes along with faint grapefruit and papaya. The malt backbone is slightly bready with biscuit and light fruit sweetness. Again, the coconut is there but subtly integrated creating an odd tropical/tapioca/suntan lotion feel. There’s an odd, lingering aftertaste from coconut and this beer is somewhat boozy in the finish The weird coconut aftertaste slightly crashes with the summit, citrus/tropical fruits and dank, earthy notes but it isn’t overwhelming. An interesting idea but the coconut doesn’t really add anything. It actually negatively affects what would have been a pretty decent IPA in my opinion.

DavoleBomb (1867) - Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 3, 2015
Poured into a snifter. 3.5 A: Moderately hazed orange color. Just about one finger of frothy off-white head. Retention is a bit below average and a short ring of lacing is left. 3.5 S: Foremost, this is an IPA. Herbal, earthy, and citrusy hops. The coconut is reasonably strong, but I think I’d like it more if the hops weren’t obscuring it so much. That said, the earthy herbal hoppiness is nice. Light bready maltiness. 3.5 T: Moderate bitterness. Again primarily earthy and herbal hoppiness. It meshes pretty well with the coconut. Again bready malts. 3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy and smooth. 3.5 D: Pretty good, but IPAs don’t impress me anymore unless they really get outside of the box. ★ 734 characters DavoleBomb, Oct 31, 2013

On tap at the Wine Bar Destin. Pours a cloudy orange with medium frothy white head leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is strong tropical fruit and floral hop. Medium mouthfeel with strong citrus, grapefruit, lingering bitterness, not much coconut flavor, very nice.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, clear orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of orange, resin, pine, floral hops into a slight fruit, some bread and biscuit comes through as well. Taste was a mix of bread, biscuit, orange peel into resin, pine, some grassy, herbal hops with a hint of other fruity notes, finishing bitter. No coconut apparent to me, but a decent IPA regardless.

Bottle. Color is light gold solid head. Grass and coconut aroma. Taste is fairly hop forward the coconut comes on second. A little sweet but interesting idea.

Interesting and tasty. Aroma of hops and coconut. Nice copper-amber color. Good weight to the palate with appropriate carbination. Flavors are a nice blend with the typical Stone bitterness that is complimented by the subtlty of the coconut, which adds a deceptive sweetness. Enjoyed it.

In short: A fruity amber IPA with only a mild coconut presence. Clean, dry, bitter. A good "almost normal" IPA.
How: Bottle 22oz, consumed when a little over one month after the beer release.
The look: Slightly cloudy (only cloudy on last glass) amber body topped by a persistent small off-white head.
In long: Nose is fruity hops with mangos, grapefruits, other tropical and citrus fruits. Very mild much coconut in the aroma, almost smells like a normal IPA. In mouth the beer offers a clean mouthfeel with a foamy texture. Taste has a little more coconut than the aroma. Biscuits malts with low sweetness sensation. Earthy fruity hops leaded by apricots, mangos and grapefruits. Mild coconut presence, not a whole lot of it but it is there nonetheless. Assertive bitterness of medium-high intensity. Relatively dry finish. I was sceptical but curious about the coconut gimmick but Stone didn’t dare enough to satisfy my curiosity, they just created another solid IPA with a mild coconut twist that isn’t strong enough to even call it a gimmick. Many people on ratebeer split bombers many ways so they can get more ratings and this might be a sign they have an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder problem, fortunately I don’t have OCD because I always drink full bottles by myself in exactly 46 equal little sips.

Transfer from BA review on 8-14-13- Served on tap in a snifter Appearance – The beer is served an orange amber color with a one finger billowy white head. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a fantastic level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell –The aroma is a sweet of tangerine with a nice tropical fruit mixed within. Along with the sweet is a good dose of a grapefruit hop smell as well as some pine. Rounding out and actually melding very well with the hop and sweet is a coconut smell which bridges the two nicely creating a rather satisfying aroma overall. Taste – The taste begins with a slightly malty biscuit taste with a moderately strong sweet tangerine and caramel. A grapefruit hop taste is rather strong upfront as well with it maintaining its presence throughout the taste. The tropical fruit comes and goes in the taste all the while remaining rather light. As the tropical fruits fade so too does some of the orange, temporarily drying the taste out ever so slightly toward the end. Right at the finish however a sweeter coconut flavor accompanied by some pine hop comes to the tongue to leave a rather hoppy and lightly sweetened fruity coconut flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the medium side in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average to slightly above average. Both are pretty nice for keeping the beer rather drinkable and a nice compromise between the hoppy and sweeter fruit and coconut flavors. Overall – Not really a coconut powerhouse like I was originally anticipating, but a nicely hinted coconut IPA. Fairly nicely done.
