COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Virginia Brewery Prototype, reflects Stone Brewing’s attention to detail and its goal of producing consistent beers among its production breweries. Due to variations in water, climate, brewing equipment, etc., a single recipe would not necessarily produce the same result at different locations; therefore, Stone’s brewers pumped out the first beer, compared it with Stone IPA from San Diego, tweaked as needed, and struck upon the process and recipe that guarantee the familiar Stone IPA nose, taste and mouthfeel that fans are accustomed to.

If Stone’s goal is consistency, then they’ve hit the mark with this prototype of the flagship IPA from the Richmond brewery. I don’t notice much difference at all between this and the classic San Diego release. It may be a little clearer orange/yellow, but that may be my eyes playing tricks on me. There is still not much foam and light carbonation, and the aroma is still grassy and citrus, with lemon or orange zest atop a mild malt. The flavor is still strong, bright, bitter, and the finish still combines the slightly sweet malt with a blast of those pine and floral hops. Well done.

Keg at the RVA brewery, 8/5/16. Clear copper, large foamy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of pithy citrus and pale malt. The taste is grapefruit, tangerine, pale malt. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness.

Bottle. Is this really a different beer than the flagship Stone IPA? OK, I’ll take it. They deliver a prototypical west-coast IPA even with east coast water. :-) Rich, hoppy, frothy. Love it. Welcome to Virginia, Stone. (#6347, 10/2/2016)

Grapefruit and lillies bouquet. Clear amber, medium yellow head, good lacing. Grapefruit, caramel, lemongrass. Distinct grapefruit peel finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation, resinous. A bit more resinous than Cali Stone IPA, but identical in all other respects.

$4.99 bomber from Wine Warehouse. Pours slightly hazy deep golden with a large off-white to beige head. Very frothy. Nose is citrus, not overly grapefruit/orange/lemon, but some sort of citrus. Taste is grapefruit peel, white pepper, pine, finishes with a smooth maltiness. Very well balanced.
