UPDATED: JUL 26, 2014 On tap @ Urban Family Public House. Pours medium pale copper with minimal head. Aroma is big pine hops. Taste is more of the same: sticky grapefruit hops, thick caramel body, bitter piney finish. I remember my first Ruination and how it was bigger than anything I’d had before. At 7.7%, that was lost in the fray over the past few years. Love to see Stone step up and show everyone that they can do a DIPA better than anyone else. What would it take for this to become a permanent fixture in the lineup?
Revisiting 2014 version, 2 years later to the day... Amazing rich sweet malt aroma with huge citrus, floral, and pine hop notes. Taste as originally noted above remains true. Extremely rich, but so well balanced that it tastes well below the 10.8%. Don’t believe I’ve had a DIPA any better than this - the gold standard. February 1st, 2015 - RuinTen has since taken off around San Diego, but I remember back in 2015 it looked novel and new, and somewhat pretty in the glass, where it burns with that characteristic Stone hue, red and blushing and angry looking. The foam kicks up a fearful storm, too, taking up fully half of this pilsener glass (an unwise choice, I know). The aroma is layered with resin and a leather sharpness defines the hop note. There's some grapefruit too and even a dash of dry lime, but the overall impression is of an appreciably dry and hoppy nose. Consistent with the smell, the flavor is dry and hoppy, but there's also a malty body to back it up. I also get the deep savory flavor of miso (as if smeared on a piece of meat prior to grilling). The aftertaste is little short, but reveals the miso glaze flavor bundled with a bitter twang. This ask a slow sipper, but enjoyable over that long time. Dark orange color with a white head. The aroma is very citrusy, piney, and floral. The flavor is not very bitter but very smooth and creamy. Pours deep golden/amber, with a medium white head and not much lacing. Fantastic aroma of orange peel, vanilla and mango. Tastes quite bitter but very rich and complex, with caramel, ale malts, orange peel, mango, mandarin and strong vanilla. Tasty and easy to drink, besides the over 10% ABV, medium body, smooth, creamy and softly carbonated, bitter finish, with lot of orange peel after taste (and burps, burps are definitely pure orange peel!). Tap at Craffity, Chiang Mai. Poured a hazy medium amber with a short-lived frothy white head. The aroma is malt, big tropical fruit citrus, resin hop, alcohol bitter. The flavour is moderate sweet with a sweet orange peel citrus, woody, resin hop, warm burning alcohol bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.
