2012 San Diego Strong Ale Fest----Dark brown color with lasting tan head. Peat, smoke, nutty vanilla, chocolate aromas. medium body, average carbonation. Wet wood, dry chocolate, smoky, earthy peat flavors---good. brokensail (16633) - Dublin, California, USA - DEC 9, 2012
Strong Ale 2012. Dark brown pour with a khaki head. Quite smoky, as expected. Some roasted malt, a bit of peat, some dark chocolate, coffee, and soap. The flavor is a bit nutty along with the peat, wood, smoke, and roasted malt. Some chocolate notes, a little bit of grass, some soap, and a light toffee sweetness. Tap at E! Burger. Rating #5. Strange beer, seems as though it has soured a bit. Just a hint of smoke left from the original beer, after that it a light sour. Not a fan really. (2409) JohnnyJ (5569) - San Diego, California, USA - OCT 6, 2012
Growler fill from stone. Dark brown pour, tan head. A bit roasty malts, noticeable sourness, and what seems like infection from the barrel, some smoke, and odd off flavors. Very different from the original. Should be 9.2% abv. Something went wrong with this beer and it wasn’t good. daleharshman (1072) - Escondido, California, USA - SEP 30, 2012
NOTE: Correct ABV for this is 9.2% (significantly higher than the standard 5.9% currently shown for this variant, and probably pushing this into the "Imperial Porter" style designation). Growler fill from brewery. Pours dark brown (almost black) with some auburn highlights and two fingers of tan head. Aroma has a distinct bretty/sour element that really stands out. Other aroma notes include big whiskey, sour cherry, some dark roasted malts (with a hint of smoke), fruit, and rubbing alcohol. Flavor has big whiskey front and center followed by various notes of fudge/cocoa, wet sour grains, astringent woody barrel, and earthy/vegetal peppers. Way boozy from the start through the finish...this obviously picked up a lot of booze in the barrel as the ABV has increased from the base 5.9% to 9.2%. This is a huge departure from the base beer and the whiskey is just so big here. Pleasant and interesting to try once, but doubt that I will really seek this out again. (3, 739)

Appearance: Pours a dark tea brown with a thin tan head. Leaves a good deal of creamy lacing behind.
Aroma: Dark sour cherry, whiskey, chocolate roast.
Taste: Black forest cake, earthy woody whiskey.
Mouthfeel: Thin side of medium bodied, prickly carbonation.
Overall: This beer rocks, has the slightest bit of tartness and tons of barrel character. For me, it doesn’t resemble it’s base beer, Stone Smoked Porter at this point, so whether you like that beer or not, give this a fair try, you might like it like I do. It will be interesting to see if this makes the 12oz. or 500 ml. format eventually. toxichop (597) - South Gate, California, USA - SEP 23, 2012
Pours black with a khaki head. S: Roasted malts, smoke, and kind of spicy notes, the aroma was really weak. t: smoke, roasted malt, ripe fruit, smoked jalapenos, bell pepper, some citrus hops and chocolate. M: nice carbonation and a bit creamy. O: found this one to be rather odd and it wasnt very enjoyable.
