COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

BottlePoured at 59F very dark. Almost black. Aroma is faint, smokey toasted, hoppy. Tastes definately smoked, and a fairly strong hopps content. The lingering smokey tang is haning around a while and there’s plenty of carbonation for everyone. Finish does not have that smooth soft feel that I like in this style. Just OK and for almost $4 I probly wont get it again.

Dark as night color with a pale chocolate, coffee aroma. Smokey, dark coffee roasted flavor with some chalkiness residing. Needs a little more smoke character. Fairly smooth and nicley hopped. It ends with a dry, then semi-biitersweet finish. An enjoyable beer.

deep brown, light brown head, mostly not lasting. aroma is lightly chocolatey, don’t really detect any roast, some chalkiness. flavor is virtually the same with a lightly to moderately hopped finish. mouthfeel is fairly substantial. i was shocked that the smoke is barely detectable in the aroma and undetectable in the flavor. while i think schlenkerla beers are somewhat overly smoked, this beer is undersmoked for the style. However, this is still a good porter, just not really what i would call a smoked porter.

06.23.04 22oz Bomber. Quite dark, hearly black with auburn highlights at edges. Little head is wispy. No smoke in aroma(?) but rather smells liek a regular porter. Not so roasty, mostly sweet smelling with some anise. Very malty. Flavor has a nice smoked quality, but more like smoke was an afterthought, or a mistake. Not at all sweet. Some raisin notes up front. Very bitter finish makes it signature Stone. Roastiness really lingers over a nice hop bite. This is a beer that grows on me and really improves as the glass empties. Could definitely stand for a more assertive smoke character. It almost seems as though the beer is trying to avoid being smokey so that it won’t be labeled a smoked beer...why? Is smokey beer less marketable? Later...I can’t get over a certain grapefruit pithe flavor that keeps poking in its head and is rather annoying. As a porter, this is a very good beer. As a smoked porter, I think it falls short. I’ve rated the beer for what it is, a porter, and ignored that the label calls it smoked.

Deep brown bordering black, fluffy tan head. All kinds of chocolate, coffee, caramel, and crème brulee, with just the slightest hint of smoke in the nose. Flavor practically matches aroma with the addition of those famous Stone hops present to balance out the richness. Full-bodied, soft carbonation, creamy, bitter-sweet finish. Brilliant!! Greg...if you can make it to PA, VA and DC, surely you can squeeze in some production for Maryland too right? :-)

Good tasty porter, the hint of smokiness really sets thisone apart from a lot of porters out there. Good hop appel and bitterness. Smokiness not overpowering the porter traits it has. More than Solid brew.

Poured a rich brown/black with a decent amount of "oatmeal" head. Aroma was chestnutty with caramel and chocolate. Taste was cream, caramel, some chocolate and a bit of hops. Very rich good amount of creaminess near the middle and caramel and chocolate coming through the finish.

Holly Head Batman!! Seriousl, this beer has crazy head. You pour 1 oz in a pint, and the rest fills up with head! This beer actually taste like it was smoked. Not sure if I like that in a beer or not. Kinda taste like burnt coffee.

Bottle.Great porter. Soft and roasty, yet fairly assertive. You get hits of chocolate/caramel and tasty/roasty malts. Nice hops in the finish. The other thing i liked about it was there seemed to be no overkill with the hops, which was great. Nicely balanced, tasty.
