UPDATED: JUL 16, 2006 Poured into liter mug- looks awesome. Pillowy head... just looks creamy. Aroma is very slight roasted malts. Flavor is subtle chocolate sweetness and roasted malt; I’m not getting coffee at all really. A touch of acidity that I don’t love. The smoked malts are far in the background, but that I think that is good. Finish is well balanced and the palate is appropriately medium bodied. Only negative is that I get a slight medicinal twinge in the finish that turns bitter... I think it is a remnant of the smoke mixing with the hops... sort of like charcoal. This dies down substantially as it warms. daniellerose7 (119) - new york, New York, USA - JAN 2, 2008
POW! ZING! KAP! Smooth and smoky like a musty old jazz club. Yeah, cats! On tap at BURP CASTLE!!! playitbybeer (118) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 6, 2010
Pours a deep pitch black with a 1 finger high country eggshell colored head. The smell is that of dark malts, chocolate, brown sugar, and a hint of hickory smoke. The taste is heavy on the malts, light on the smoke...pretty much light on everything that isn’t chocolatey or malty...there’s really no smokey quality that I can taste. Finish isn’t overwhelming...maybe a bit underwhelming...but it does pair well with the barbequed chicken in front of me. edfitz (118) - Toledo, Ohio, USA - DEC 8, 2006
Slightly smokey aroma, as you would expect. Deep brown appearance, with a lacy tan head. Flavor of chocolates and hints of smoke. Smoke seems less prevelant than when I had this in the past. Very good flavor. Malty and smooth with just a slightly smokey aftertaste. One of my favorite porters. portermax55 (118) - Canterbury, Connecticut, USA - OCT 10, 2007
22 oz. into pint. Pours a deep, dark brown with a light, tanish head. Smells of chocolate and malts. Taste is at first sweet with a hint of caramel, and finishes with a bit of smoked flavor. Very rich, smooth mouthfeel from start to finish. Will drink again!

Pours like motor oil with a heavy tan head. Aroma consists of chocolate, coffee, and smoked nuts. The smoke is subtle enough to make this one of the best porters around. MattyKakes (117) - Virginia, USA - NOV 17, 2013
This porter has a bitter burnt aroma with a smoked malt flavor, accompanied by small bursts of hops. The color is dark brownish black and has excellent lacing. Kuzo (116) - Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 7, 2013
Pours a dark brown with reddish hues. Lots of lacing on the glass. Smells like roasted malts and smoked wood. Taste is a solid porter base with quite a bit of smoke. Some sweet malts and dark roasted coffee with hints of chocolate. A pleasant hop bitterness on the finish. Light/medium bodied with good carbonation. Much lighter than I expected. Overall this was an enjoyable porter. This would have been a great beer to enjoy with a nice cigar. leninthedesert (116) - Nevada, USA - JAN 24, 2008
Very interesting beer. A lot of malty character - coffee and chocolate. The smokiness is so subtle that it almost tastes like a rich porter bring drunk by a campfire. Finishes bittery-smooth...and very warm. bbooth (115) - Gilbert, Arizona, USA - DEC 30, 2002
Very nice porter. Dark Borwn in color with a nice beige head. Roasty aroma with a hint of chocolate. Nice roasty start. Slight Smokiness start to kick in, in the middle. Nice slight bitter finish. Very good.
