A sweet aroma of malt and smoke. Appearance is black with a good tan head. Taste is smoky, chocolate and sweet with a pleasant sweet aftertaste. Palate is moderately thick and coating with noticeable carbination. Overall an excellent porter. rich42 (128) - USA - SEP 29, 2002
not what I expected from stone. nice soft, rich, chocolatey porter with a touch of smoke. very little bitterness. average thickness for the style. nose isn't very well defined - but it may need to warm up a bit. not in anyway "over the top" like some of other stones brews - easy drinking. well balanced and enjoyable (but I'd gladly swap this for a bottle of their russian imperial stout) tkaufman (128) - Lewis Center, Ohio, USA - FEB 24, 2003
Aroma of chocolate and toasted malt. Pours a deep dark brown with a nice withstanding head. Flavor is excellent with malt sweetness, toasted malt, smoked malt, chocolate, and some hop bitterness to back it up. Not overpowering like some other smoke brews. Another fine brew from Stone. Pours a dark brown, nearly black, with off-brown head. Aromas of roasted burnt malts, and chocolate. Flavors included roasted malt(little nutty), strong chocolate with some coffee, finishes with a sweet peaty oak that lingers. alcoholica (128) - Dublin, Ohio, USA - NOV 6, 2005
Dark chocolate color creamy head. Coffee chocolate smokey roasted. I love porters and this is a good one.

dark dark brown pour-sizable brown head. smoky malty aroma.. coffee there too. flavor is mildy sweet.. roasty, with a good bitterness in the end.. smoky aftertaste. somewhat full-mouthfeel, for a porter. I last drank this a long time ago, now I appreciate it much more. a very good porter. johntreeter (126) - Greenwood, Indiana, USA - OCT 4, 2008
Bomber. Pours a very dark amber with a tick light tan head that laces to the bottom. Light aroma of chocolate, malt and smoke with some earth tones preasent. Flavor is were this beer is at with chocolate, coffee, wood, smoke, and roasted malts balancing from begining to finish. Med body, lively carb, creamy texture, and smooth dry feel. A very fine and interesting porter. rgfellow (126) - - DEC 31, 2012
A bomber at home. Toasty, oaky aroma. Beautiful dark mocha color, caramel head, wispy lacing. Taste is light porter goodness. Carb level just right. Nutty aftertaste. Enjoyed. rotoguru (126) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JUN 9, 2010
SD trip, sampler: Another solid Stone offering, deep black with red notes and great burnt coffee, chocolate malt nose. Light smoked, alcohol and cask like flavors (this was not a cask-conditioned or wood chip version) in the mix. stephenj007 (125) - Houston, Texas, USA - AUG 25, 2012
Bottle pour, tan foamy head, nice red/brown hues, very appealing.
Balanced aromas of mild smoked grains, some cherry and tootsie roll.
Was expecting more chocolate, tobacco and coffee. Most porter styles tend to be consistently prominent in those three aromas, but this one was not.
Body was on the thin side, easily drinkable, not much carbonation. Tastes leaned toward sweet, with a bit more hops presence than other porters.
I would have to rate this as a "light" porter overall. Certainly a good quality brew, but just lacking the usual brawn of most porters.
