Draft. Large tan head atop black body with brown edge. Aroma is moderately sweet, grapefruit, some coffee, roast. Taste is moderately sweet, grapefruit, roast/coffee. Soft medium body, some acidity, resin. swoopjones (7020) - Buffalo, New York, USA - MAY 23, 2013
Draft at blue monk, medium bodied black pour. Minor lacing. Coffee and slight peppery aroma. Flavor is coffee dominant with little showing of base. Big espresso roast upfront dominates rest of flavor profile. Bitterness from base beer seems lost. Still a great beer to sample Robbievegas (230) - Las vegas, Nevada, USA - OCT 11, 2012
I tried this on tap at Lucky Pie in Denver, CO. I love Stone brewery! Unfortunately this is not one of my favorites from them. A lot of pine in the aroma and flavor with coffee notes. Too much pine, it over powers the palate.

L.A. Beer Week 2012 at Stone-Pasadena. Coffee in the nose. Not roasty but not green either. That taste doesn’t follow through to the taste and the bitterness level is lower than usual Stone standards. A fun twist on the SSR. brokensail (16633) - Dublin, California, USA - FEB 7, 2013
Black pour with a finger of tan head. Kind of an old coffee aroma which is a bit acidic. Spicy, has almost a pepper note, lots of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and grassy hops. Mild grapefruit and pineapple. The flavor is heavy on the chocolate, roasted malt, and old coffee notes. A bit acidic, mild bitterness, pine, grapefruit, and grass. Light molasses sweetness.

On draft at Freshcraft. Pours a hazy brown with an off-white head. Nose is rosted malts, coffee, and big hoppy, piney bitterness. Flavor is similar- the roasted malts and big coffee presence is there, but the piney hops overcome any effort by the coffee to allow balance. Light to medium in body and overwhelmingly hoppy. hapjydeuce (1002) - Carlsbad, California, USA - JUN 19, 2013
On tap at Stone Company Store in Oceanside. Deep mahogany color with black center and fine beige head. Aroma is smoke, peat wet earth and ground espresso coffee beans. Flavor transitions between sweet roasted malt, coffee bitterness and piney hops. Finish is weird with two different flavors lending to the bitterness, competing between espresso and hops. Almost makes it less bitter and more vegetable-like. Interesting, not really my thing. thome50 (1295) - Morro Bay via Orange County, California, USA - MAY 16, 2013
Draft at Tustin Brewing. Pours a deep black with little to no tan head. Aroma is licorice, slight espresso and cocoa. Taste is more licorice that overwhelms and makes this barely drinkable. The espresso beans don’t really work here for me and the hops aren’t really here to help it out.
