It’s interesting to taste this beer, it’s boozy, hoppy and has a lingering bitterness to it. It also has a bit of an oily texture, pretty good, not a 100 though. Christpuncher (3135) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 23, 2013
A very dark beer that would make you think it is a stout. Nicely bitter and hoppy. Once again stone always makes a great product

Heavily skewed towards the hop end. Bitter, lots of clear additions. It’s great but I think there’s a bit of stones reputation figuring into that 100 rating. Not too balanced, but a nice bite with a hint of roasted malt. DavidWoodruff (619) - Windsor, California, USA - MAY 7, 2013
Aroma: Dark roasted malt, espresso and an odd mosquito-spray smell - my guess is the hops.
Appearance:Black with a small tan head.
Flavor: Roasted malt and caramel - moderately sweet.
Palate: Full bodied with soft carbonation and a silky texture.
Overall: Very impressed with how well balanced it is for the typically unbalanced style. Cbuk1013 (247) - Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA - JUN 2, 2013
This is a very good beer but it’s definitely over hyped. Like many of Stone’s beers.

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2013 Cold bottle from Brewdog. BB Sep 2013. Black, small tan head. Up front there is resin, grapefruit, some coffee detectable. Finish is chocolatey. I don’t have much to say about it because there isn’t much complexity, but it is a nice black IPA. Good balance between sweetness and bitterness. MiP (15667) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - AUG 5, 2013
Draught at BBF13. Caramelly aroma, a little alcohol. Very dark brown colour, seems cloudy. Good caramelly flavour. Quite bitter and quite alcoholic, but well-balanced. Sweetish with a spicy hop note. Good. tdoyledesign (179) - Michigan, USA - DEC 20, 2013
Pours a black with a thin viscosity and a thin head. Smells is smokey hops and a hint of caramel and hops. Taste is roasted malts with a hop finish. Palate has done roared malts, middle is apricot, molasses and caramel and a hop finish. KansaiBeerLvrs (5153) - Kyoto, JAPAN - JAN 18, 2014
8.7% Black IPA bottle on sale at Antenna America. Great dark cola pour with a thick creamy head of beige foam that reminds me of a root beer float! Nice sweet hoppy citrus aroma with a decent underlying chocolate with a touch of smoke. The taste is grapefruit, mesquite, citrus, pine a dab of cocoa. Medium to full body. Overall a really good Black IPA but I prefer a bit more malts to balance out the hops. Quite good but leaning slightly towards the hops, digging the bit of smokiness.

Pours a very deep, very dark brown with a light foam. Smells of roasted malts and hops. Has a very rich delicious flavor of cocoa roasts and bitter citrus hops. This one holds it down.
