On tap at brewery. Black with a thick creamy tan head. Chocolate, grain, light smoke aroma with a faint bourbon presence. Tastes of chocolate, vanilla, caramel, smoke, and very faint bourbon. Silky medium bodied palate. hopscotch (11445) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - DEC 11, 2012
Growler... Translucent dark brown ale with a few scattered bubbles. The aroma is a swirl of bourbon, chocolate and vanilla. Medium to full-bodied with mellow carbonation. The flavor is fairly thin, but quite roasty with lots of bourbon warmth and a tannic, bitter finish. Thanks goes out to richiesd for floating this rarity my way! On tap at HAF, maybe the last beer I could drink on a fresh palate
A: A moderately fluffy creme colored head with an almost perfectly black body.
N: Intense bourbon on the nose. Caramel, honey, and vanilla. Some chocolate and smoke, but it’s mostly barrel and oak.
T: Smoke, peat, and bourbon. Vanilla, and honey. A pleasant espresso through the middle to balance the sweetness. Dark chocolate.
M: On the lighter side of stomach-sinking. Noticeable alcohol. Could use some improvement here.
O: Suitable for cave aging indeed. I believe the program said this was a 2011 vintage, and it was probably neck and neck with the other best beers I had at the festival. (Though aged Abyss is hard to beat.) I would love bottles of this.

Tap @ Holiday Ale Fest 2012... Poured pitch black with a thick, frothy, khaki head. This took the fest. My first beer and I started high with this one. Had to end with a full pour it was so good. Aroma had loads of barrel, with some more barrel, and barrel again. Moderate mouthfeel on this one. Mild smoke, as it warmed this was more apparent. Some warming alcohol in there with roast, vanilla, and thick maltiness. A nice sipper with notes of oak and more wood in the finish. Quite dessert-like. Yes please! Sampled at FoBAB 10 - 2012 (Chicago, IL). Pours a richer deep blackish hue, dark and ominous, opaque inviting hues with dark elements. Dark and inviting with roast, toast, cocoa and vanilla. Mellow oak and barrel gives some life, roasty and caramel with gentle growing smoke elements. Silky smooth nose. Initial is fuller bodied, offering cocoa and roast, earth and gentle smoke. Earth, roast, and caramel. Touches of sweetness glide over vanilla, barrel, gentle spirit and earthy smoke. Middle shows deeper flavors, silky dark malts and earthy smoke, roast. Firm barrel, vanilla and cocoa, some coffee, kiss of dark fruit. Backend and finish show lingering smoke and barrel, firm malts don’t let it get overwhelming with that sweet dark malts still giving some chase. Pretty nice beer here, the smoke element gives it a good vibe and some memorability for me. Nose is a touch lacking in strength, but the beer is quite nice. rxeight (3332) - Illinois, USA - NOV 20, 2012
Sample at Fobab - this was one of the better beers at an all star festival. Dark dark pour. Big flavors in this one. Oak and smoke dominate this one, with a nice subtile bourbon balancing it all out. This seems to me like a stronger version of smoked porter and then bourbon aged. This works incredible well. The bourbon mixes great with the smoke. Both are strong but neither overpower. I could sip on this all day. Huhzubendah (3775) - Washington DC, USA - NOV 19, 2012
Growler shared by yourefragile. Thanks Michael.
The beer appears a cola brown color with virtually no head or lacing. Perhaps the growler format contributed to this? The aroma offers bourbon, roast, malt (slightly charred), smoke, oak. The aroma is superior to the flavor. A bit thin and even perhaps watery, with roast and smoke. Bourbon and barrel character is prominent throughout. Overall, this was decent. Thanks, Moll! Nose is a bit boozy and barrel heavy. Flavor has some booze an roast with light oxidation. A bit thin, but well carbonated.
