Bottle at MC Zurich. Pours black with a medium foam. Aroma is smoked, meaty, dark ripe fruit. Body is medium, rather bitter, lively carbonation, good smoke flavours, ash and a bit of tar. Palate is rather dry, still ashy. Good! Held up well with the ageing, impressive. lundy (47) - - JAN 15, 2014
Dark brown to black, ample tan head. Strong smoke and cacao flavor. Aroma is the same but relatively mild. Aftertaste mostly bitter.
Smokiness is well balanced with the malt and quite pleasant. TheJvd (1321) - NETHERLANDS - AUG 24, 2013
Bottle. Pours dark brown with a vast tanned head leaving nice lacing. Aroma is roast, ash, some licorice and slightly sweet. Taste is smokey, but very subtle, slightly sweet, soft bitter with a lingering smokey finish. Decent body and quite a smooth textrue. Medium carbo. Well made, with the smoke not overpowering. Nice stuff. fiulijn (21214) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - AUG 15, 2013

The benchmark is Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen
Dark brown color with some red hue, and generous beige compact head. The aroma is mild, not fatty schinken, but woodfire instead, instinctively drier, a bit creamy. The carbonation is too high, like most beers from S&A, hence the mouthfeel is impacted, it’s smooth and dry, and just too lean; flavor of roasted malt with a touch of firewood, coal; luckily no liquorice; correct bitterness, with a dry but balanced end, although the final is a bit weak.
I prefer some residual sweetness usually, but it’s a good beer.

Black colour, small brown head. Aroma is fruity, mild liquorice, smoked wood as well as some mild tarlike notes. Flavour is sweet liquorice, mild smoked wood, syrup and toffee.
Bottled, thanks Bov! Near black, small but firm head. Smokey nose with light tar. Medium bodied with rounded, firm mouthfeel. Elegant rather than rustic, firm and well defined with controlled levels of smoke. Mid bitter finish. Bov (13221) - Bienne, SWITZERLAND - MAY 3, 2012
courtesy of Tom Strickler - dark brown beer with a long lasting beige foam; fairly smokey aroma with notes of ashes and brownies; respectable malt backbone, moderate carbonation and with a light earthy bitterness; pretty dry and smokey malty finish - very well-integrated smokeyness
