A 2/00 version. Soft, malty, and maybe too old. Head dissapates quickly...
From old tasting notes. Labeled as "Cuvée NotreDame Belgian Style Abbey Double". Hazy reddish brown color. Creamy beige head. Soft fruity candy-like malt nose. Tangy fruity malt flavor hints at prunes and currants. There’s an underlying yeastiness that imparts a uniqueness to this ale. Very good indeed. Nice Belgian lace. Tap from just a small sampler (2oz?). The most obvious quality to me was how much this reminded me of a tripel; plum and raisin, sure, but general maltiness with honey on top and much more in the way of phenolic overtones. 12 oz glass off of tap...Large light brown head that dies quickly. Hazy brown with a red hue. Malty somewhat buttery nose that was originally sour, as it warmed it made for some pleasent changes. Medium body, good mouthfeel, creamy texture. Good malt flavor, Fruity, yeasty , spiceyness all work well together. a "multi-colored " beer , appearing lighter in color towards the bottom of the glass. Mid hops, with a fizzy carbonation. 750 ml bottle that I have had for several years - I’m not sure of the age of the bottle. Pours a crystal clear deep red with a moderate, sudsy off-white head that is initially more reminiscent of the head on a glass of Coca Cola than anything else. The head quickly settles into an incomplete film and leaves a partial coating on the glass. Pleasant aroma of malt and brown sugar. The flavor is malty and a bit richer than the aroma suggests, but with none of the brown sugar sweetness. Fairly smooth with just a hint of alcohol at the very end. Very nice authentic Dubbel. Primarily a malty flavor but dubbel fruit tones come make their presence known in the aroma. Sampled at Stoudts 17th Annual Microfest: June 2008
