COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Clear dark reddish brown with a big off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, dried fruit, yeasty, dark sugar and light spicy. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet and moderate bitter finish with warming alcohol. 200611

Bottle split at JF’s, 26/12/13. Extremely dark mahogony brown with a good sized biege head that dissipates to pondwork, Nose is sweet, rich caramel, dark toffee fudge, dates, raisens, booze. Taste comprises Xmas Cake, liqourice, toffee, hint of cocoa, sweet tasting, rich caramel, nutty tang, dark fruits. Full bodied, fine carbonation, warming alcohol in the finish. Ok easy drinking quad but lacks a little complexity and finesse.

Sampled on tap at PIB, pours a hazy amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, spices, brown sugar and dry notes. Flavour of brown sugar, Belgian spices and slight yeast. Quite complex, with a good dry, low sweetness quality. Very solid.

Bottle. It pours an almost clear body, dark ruby in color and with a dense, light beige head. Lots of sugar and dried fruits on the nose, some anise, and a touch of roasted malts. The flavor is dominated by dried fruits, with anise, white sugar, dark sugar and some bitterness. Medium to full body, pleasant carbonation. Lasting finish with dried fruits. Certainly a nice one, but not the typical quadrupel. 121102

Dark brown pour with a khaki head. Rather roasty nose for a quadruple. Some molasses, a bit of chocolate, and quite a bit of alcohol. There is a decent bit of spice and fruit, though. Tastes a bit boozy, but some good sugar and molasses sweetness. A fair amount of chocolate and roasted malt which give a light bitterness.
