COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

33cl bottle. Dark brown colour with a good formation of tan head but quickly diminishes in a thin layer. Aroma has chocolate hints, slightly spiced, toasted malts and caramel. Flavour is bready, with brown sugar trace,s sweet and chocolate at the beginning. Dense on palate, the final is long and with candy sugar taste although also slightly bittery too. Carbonation is soft. Body is high. Texture is oily.

Bottle shared by jayhawk73. Thanks Jeff! The beer appears a dark maple brown color with a thick, dense, light beige head. Excellent retention and ample lacing. Quads are just great looking beers. The aroma brings dark fruits, particularly plums, figs, raisins. Yeast presence is there as well. The aroma is a bit weak for the style. Sweet raisins with a hint of yeast. Lingering bitterness in the finish. Caramel malt and toffee. Alcohol presence is very well disguised. A bit of warmth going down. Nice feel. A good sipper. Not as complex as the Trappist examples of the style. Still, an enjoyable beer and worth a try. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-10-2011

8 ounce sample on tap at Perfecto Lounge. The aroma on this is a little weird. Lightly tart and sour with some caramelly hints. I also detect some anise, and not much else. Not really what Id expect from a quad. Transparent ruddy mahogany body with a small, off-white head and decent lacing. Starts tart and lightly astringent. Becomes a little sweet towards the middle. Some molasses character is in there. Finishes a bit boozy with some more astringency. Not a big fan of this beer at all.

33 cl. bottle poured in to a trappist glass. Jet black with a fluffy tan head. Sweet aroma with malts, caramel, dark chocolate, plums, spices and herbal hops. Taste is sweet. Full body, surprisingly carbonated for the abv., not unpleasant. Finishes long lasting with caramel malts, chocolate, licorice, port dark dried fruits and a hint of alcohol. Good quadrupel.

Bottle brought back from a trip from Bruges. Rich ruby colour witha lasting frothy cream head. Peppery stewed fruit aroma. The flavour has lots of peppery spice with sweet stewed fruits, raisin, toffee and clove. Nice.

750 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, lasting beige head, with some lacing, over a clear reddish brown (SRM 20) body....nose is raisin, cherry, toffee/caramel, cola....taste is dried cherry, raisin, bit of allspice, finishing slightly astringent...mouth feel light, sticky, alcohol heat present, carbonation adds a pleasant spritz. This meets the style. It is not as rich as some, the alcohol is a bit too obvious, and complexity is on the light side. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7

750 ml bottle. As an aside, I love the label, especially the moon. Pours a clear deep mahogany with a large tan head that remains substantial to the end of the glass and leaves a sudsy coating on the glass with each sip. Pleasant aroma of caramel and dates. The flavor is caramel, malt and dates. Fairly smooth and well-rounded on the palate. Overall, a very nice beer.
