COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Draft. Poured dark reddish brown with a huge head. Aroma of dark malts and cherry, maybe some other dark fruits as well. Taste adds a bit of chocolate. Light airy palate is unique and enjoyable but based on that and the head I do wonder if it was intended to be that way. All in all very nice and surprisingly drinkable for a quad.

330mL bottle BB 26-11-2016 Lively deep brown body, holds a nice creamy beige head, leaving clumpy lace. Rich sugary aroma; treacley, molasses, dates & prunes. rum & raisin, some earthy phenolics. Thick, viscous body, lifted creamy carbonation, serious length, smooth warming finish. Particularly earthy on the body. Theres notes of dark brown/cooked sugars, but not particularly sweet, quite savoury, a slight bit tannic & dry with dark fruits & wood spice. Booze is not shy. Tasty stuff, just a touch rough around the edges.

Bottled from Burg Bieren, Ermelo. Tasted side by side with La Trappe Quadrupel and Bush de Noel. Brown colored, medium head. Malty nose, liquorice, some hops. Quite bitter flavor, some liquorice again, later on hops take over, resulting in a bitter finish. Obvious ethanol presence. This quadrupel differs from the others in many ways, e.g. in color, but also the malty liquorice nose and, most obviously, the hopbitter finish. Difference isnt necessarily a bad thing, but taken together the flavors in this quadrupel seem a lot more imbalanced than in its two competitors. Does it have aging potential? I actually wouldnt know, lets wait and see. For the time being, ill stick to the world class quadrupels from La Trappe and Bush.

A heavy nose of banana, clove and spiced rum. Heavy and sweet with a burst of the candy sugar then a long, dry and herbal finish. Its very fizzy. With a nice boozy complexity in the finish.

Dark brown. Malty sweet. Classic barley wine. No real belgian character. Very nice though. Rich and sweet with a complex malt profile.

Sweet malty and roasty nose, brown sugar, caramel, dark fruit, raisins, plum, cloves, chocolate, coffee, some alcohol; opaque ruby brown color, small, frothy tan head, dissipates rather quickly, thin layer reamins, good lacing; medium sweetbitter, roasty, coffee; full-bodied, oily to creamy texture; smooth bittersweet finish, roasty and fruity notes. A well balanced beer with well hidden alcohol. Great.
