COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Alphadelic (2249) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUN 26, 2015
A heavy nose of banana, clove and spiced rum. Heavy and sweet with a burst of the candy sugar then a long, dry and herbal finish. It’s very fizzy. With a nice boozy complexity in the finish.

Nice and decent quadrupel but feels a bit too easy to drink. In taste caramel, toasted notes. Sweet and sticky. Good but cannot be compared to the big quad players.

33cl bottle. Dark brown with medium to big head. NOSE : burned malts with dried fruits like raisins, figs, pineapple and mango. Fresh banana and licorice. SIP : smooth and creamy. Low to medium carbonation. The body is thick. The body texture is spot on. It marry well with sweet, burned and fruity flavors of this beer. Sweet chocolate tart with a hint of alcohol. Dark fruits and licorice give it a little sour and dry middle. Ending is deep and malty. Some spiciness in the finish. Alcohol is amazingly well hidden. OVERALL : a great brew ; well balanced, smooth body and the drinkability is quite surprising for the amount of alcohol it has. Well done.

Draft. Poured dark reddish brown with a huge head. Aroma of dark malts and cherry, maybe some other dark fruits as well. Taste adds a bit of chocolate. Light airy palate is unique and enjoyable but based on that and the head I do wonder if it was intended to be that way. All in all very nice and surprisingly drinkable for a quad.

Un très joli sigle de bouteille. Nearly the design of the Moonlight Brewing Company from California. A bucolic corner of the Sonoma Valley for this one, and the historical medieval city of Bruges for the other one... But the most important is what you will find in your glass !!! About the Straffe Hendrik quadruple, we have two things to say first : 1. A member of the Belgian Family Brewers, and an old story beginning in 1856 with the family Maes (not the one of the pils producer !!), and a first mention of brewing in 1546 !!! 2. One of the rare belgian beers with the name of « quadruple », unusual in our vocabulary. I have also seen that beer qualified as a barley wine. Let us see... First of all, a very high level : 11 % abv. A very dark color, very encouraging... Un conseil : try it, and after that you see a moonlight brewing in the sky...

Dark brown. Malty sweet. Classic barley wine. No real belgian character. Very nice though. Rich and sweet with a complex malt profile.

330 ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long.

Looks: Translucent Burgundy colour with a thin ring of yeast sediments; One finger head and crumpety light beige foam which lasts for 3 minutes; Beautiful sticky lacing with quite fizzy carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and sweet dark malt, with light roastyness, almonds, strong caramel, sticky toffee, very light coffee, chocolate, cream, sugar, moderate alcohol, strong Bel yeast and light grass.

Taste: Strong but pleasantly sweet dark malt, with moderate alcohol, light liquorices, plums, caramel, light toffee, Cola, chocolate, light coffee, sugar, strong Bel yeast, light lemon, moderate bitter hops and grass.

Body: Full body. Very creamy and slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Good dark maltyness in a rich, very smooth and silky background. Booze and sugar hit first but they do not scream nor warming, but rather in light touch and pleasant. Strong caramel mixed with Cola and light coffee. Quite yeasty and increasingly lemony to compliment the sweet booze. It’s simple but the balancing work out just fine. Easy and nice!

Booze and Sweetness: The 11% abv is well hidden all the time, very well-managed and no knock on whatsoever. Incredible! Sweetness is strong but never cloying, as if it’s from chocolate bar. Very neat!

Hoppiness: Light grass in nose. Lemon and light grass in taste; Bitterness is fairly strong for a lasting, mid-astringent sweet booze finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Sweet, creamy and quite bitter to mouth.

Comments: Like its 9° Tripel brother, this Quad is simple in aroma and taste. Yet its foundation is rock solid, with beautiful looks and heads, very creamy body, very pleasant sweet malt, hidden booze and hoppy finish. It may not be as complex or colorful as La Trappe Quadrupel, but it’s very nice for chilling out. Recommended!

This is my second time trying this. The first was on tap at the Yard House a few weeks ago. This rating is for the bottled version, acquired from Julio’s. Poured into a snifter. A very dark chestnut brown color with a huge frothy tan head. Settles to a thick pillowy lace. Deep earthy-fruit aromas and flavor. Dark candi sugar is nicely balanced by a dry earthy bitterness. Chewy and silky texture. Fantastic!
