COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

330 ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long.

Looks: Translucent Burgundy colour with a thin ring of yeast sediments; One finger head and crumpety light beige foam which lasts for 3 minutes; Beautiful sticky lacing with quite fizzy carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and sweet dark malt, with light roastyness, almonds, strong caramel, sticky toffee, very light coffee, chocolate, cream, sugar, moderate alcohol, strong Bel yeast and light grass.

Taste: Strong but pleasantly sweet dark malt, with moderate alcohol, light liquorices, plums, caramel, light toffee, Cola, chocolate, light coffee, sugar, strong Bel yeast, light lemon, moderate bitter hops and grass.

Body: Full body. Very creamy and slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Good dark maltyness in a rich, very smooth and silky background. Booze and sugar hit first but they do not scream nor warming, but rather in light touch and pleasant. Strong caramel mixed with Cola and light coffee. Quite yeasty and increasingly lemony to compliment the sweet booze. Its simple but the balancing work out just fine. Easy and nice!

Booze and Sweetness: The 11% abv is well hidden all the time, very well-managed and no knock on whatsoever. Incredible! Sweetness is strong but never cloying, as if its from chocolate bar. Very neat!

Hoppiness: Light grass in nose. Lemon and light grass in taste; Bitterness is fairly strong for a lasting, mid-astringent sweet booze finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Sweet, creamy and quite bitter to mouth.

Comments: Like its 9 Tripel brother, this Quad is simple in aroma and taste. Yet its foundation is rock solid, with beautiful looks and heads, very creamy body, very pleasant sweet malt, hidden booze and hoppy finish. It may not be as complex or colorful as La Trappe Quadrupel, but its very nice for chilling out. Recommended!

Very deep copper body with a large, creamy, very dense, beige, very long-lived head that laces my glass excellently. Sweet and strong aroma that at the same time also is crisp and spicy. I get delicious notes of Belgian yeast, generic fruits, caramel and spices. The Belgian yeast is a main contributor to the strong flavour as well, along with generic fruits, caramel, brown sugar, alcohol and spices including black pepper. I also get notes of dried dark fruits, but they are fainter than they tend to be for this beer style. The taste is moderate sweet and moderate bitter. Full body, surprisingly dry and with a rather lively carbonation. World class!

Pours in dark amber almost black color body, with hints of ruby againts the light. The head is light tan, pretty big and long lasting. The aroma has caramel notes, probably from the candi sugar, hints of toast, dried plums. Taste is heavy on high alcohols, caramel sweetness with high earthy bitterness, hidden by the sweet balanced. Body is full, oily texture, low carbonation.

Pours very dark with fresh spicy aromatics reminiscent of bath beads. A canopy of terminal velocity expands and sticks like a mary lou rettin face plant on the pony boy express. Medium nectar with good carbonation. Very rich and warming with flavors of coffee bean, plum, nectarine, brown sugar. Theres a defined acidity that really holds it all together balancing out all the sugar. The finish lingers long into the session. A classy ale indeed.
