COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Botelja. Clear like reddish brown farvi wit a medium beige head, some lacing. Sweet aroma of well toasted malt and caramel with dark fruits, some alcohol and bit chocolate. Good mouthfeel. Sweet flavour, dark maltiness and caramel with dark fruits, alcohol, bit chocolate and a soft bitterness. Sweet finish.

Bottle @ home aged probably 18 months since purchasing in Colorado. Not sure I ever had Straffe Hendrik while in Bruges but excited to have it now. Pours a somewhat murky brownish appearance with a thin but decent light brown head. Quite rich woody/bourbon-esque, spicy, dark chocolate, herbal, moderately dark fruity aroma that is very interesting. Chewy yeasty, tangy, big raisin, plum, blueberry, toffee, chocolate, rich candy sugar flavor. Fun to drink. Would buy again.

Butilka: Deep ruby-amber coloured, almost clear, small and stable off-White foamy creamy layer; sweet raisins, molasses, sweet wine and caramel in the pretty complex nose, ornated by traces of chocolate; moderate to solid sweet and - subdued - bitter flavour, full bodied; lingering sweet-vinous and aramelly finish with some cacao in the very end. Good,good...

Bottle. Very dark brown with red tints and a beige foam. Aromas are marzipan and coffee with chocolate. Alcohol with vinous notes. Flavours are vinous with warming alcohol and marzipan. Indeterminate malts with, as previously mentioned, strong glue. Dry berries with berries and pepper to finish. Weird but decent.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2011 Had this at Carmargue, Berchem, Antwerp, Belgiew 19-03-11. Glowing rich red ruby coloured beer with superb clarity, looks great. Alcohol sits very heavy in the mouth and there is a bittreness the persists throughout. Not sure whether this is a bit raw /young but it doesn’t work well for me, in fact the bitterness is quite harsh and quite medicinal at times, not really my thing couldn’t even finish it. Bomber. Reddish brown pour - rich looking. Aroma is dark fruit and dark chocolate. Just a bit of booze. All the elements are there, but not quite as standout as St. Bernardus or Rochefort.

Bottle at home. Pours a hazy brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, dark fruits, raisins, cherry, abv remains well hidden, decent enough quad, nice to try but I wouldn’t drink a bunch of this.

DuffMan (10436) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - MAR 13, 2013
Bottle. Lovely auburn colour with a low light brown head, no lace. Aroma is spicy and yeasty and sweet, leading into a palate filled with chewy sweet brown sugar, dried figs, dried apricots, sultanas, and hints of dark cherries and tea. Very complex, warming without being harsh. One of the most enjoyable quads I’ve had in a while.

33 cl bottle @ Gastopub Tuulensuu, Tampere.
Dark ruby red with a medium beige head. Caramel and dark malts on the nose, notes of licorice and orange peel. Dark sweet malts and caramel on the flavor, orange and some syrup also. Complex, but unfortunately the alcohol dominates too much at the end.
