Boysenberry and toffee nose. Clear garnet brown, thin tan head. Rich toffee and treacle flavor. Tasteful alcohol presence for a quad. A whisper of peat and oak is there. Bottle. Pours mostly clear dark brown with a large, creamy and frothy light tan head, long retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is dark fruity esters (dates, plums, figs), earthy and woody hops, caramel and cookie malt, and lightly toasted grains. Flavor is malt dominant with dark fruity esters, cellar and wood notes, light hops and bitterness with spicy and peppery alcohol. Pours a small light brown frothy head that mostly diminishes. Body is dark red brown. Aroma contains molasses, forest fruits, malts, dough, licorice, raisin, plum, brown sugar, alcohol. Flavor starts off sweet and light bitter, to finish bitter and astringent, a bit dry with some alcohol. Light acidity is noticeable all the way. Body is medium, texture creamy and carbonation is soft. There is not much development in flavors but there is a lot of aroma's and the overall taste is just great. A very dark brown-black beer with a rich malty and chocolate flavour, spicy red fruity and currant notes, followed by a sweet, wamring creamy oak and vanilla finish. UPDATED: JUL 13, 2017 33cl, BB 11/2015. - Pours an unctuous dark brown/purple with solid off-white head. Aroma is is an aromatic and port-like syrup of sweet dark fruits. Taste is immensely layered as you would expect of a quadruple, ranging from intital malt and dark fruit sweetness with heavy alcohol to coffee roast dryness and pronounced hop spice shifting to take centre stage as it warms. Strange effervescence for a beer this heavy. Depending on your drinking needs of the evening, you could dub this mix willfully complex or dramatically confused. What remains is a unique and artfully crafted mahogani master of a quad. // Aged bottle bb03/2017: surprsingly rich, full and tasty, quadrupel going on ImpStout: more body than the simplified Bernardus 12, with fuler toucher of dark prune and chocolate. Very easy to drink, velvet palate. Would prefer this to most quadrupels and trappists in this version... to revisit fresh and source (tap?) soon.
