COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown/burgundy color ale with a super large light brown foamy head with excellent retention and some lacing. Aroma of candi sugar and dry fruits with light caramelized malt notes is quite sublime. Taste is a great mix between some candi sugar notes, some light dry fruits notes, heavy Belgian style malt with a light spicy/peppery finish. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no real apparent alcohol notes. Wonderful beer with just enough complexity and still retaining good drinkability.

Very deep copper body with a large, creamy, very dense, beige, very long-lived head that laces my glass excellently. Sweet and strong aroma that at the same time also is crisp and spicy. I get delicious notes of Belgian yeast, generic fruits, caramel and spices. The Belgian yeast is a main contributor to the strong flavour as well, along with generic fruits, caramel, brown sugar, alcohol and spices including black pepper. I also get notes of dried dark fruits, but they are fainter than they tend to be for this beer style. The taste is moderate sweet and moderate bitter. Full body, surprisingly dry and with a rather lively carbonation. World class!

(Draught) Deep, dark ruby with a medium, creamy and lacy, beige head. Sweetish and dark-fruity nose with anise-clove spiciness. Flavor is anise-coriander-spicy with sweetish maltiness and brown sugar, and roasted malt in the finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Quite full-bodied, sticky and lightly syrupy palate with medium carbonation. The house flavor (that Im not a fan of) is definitely there, but there is so much else going on, that it is not disturbing. A quite well made and clean quad. 6437

Draft. A deep red beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of candy sugar, malt, alcohol, and spices. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, candy sugar, dried fruits, yeast, and some alcohol, leading to a dry fruity finish.

(Bottled) Drinking 11% Quadrupel beer at 1.45 in the afternoon is one of the perks of entrepreneurialism ; this is actually pretty swillable , with the booze being cool and satisfying. A rich caramel palate ,lots of complex tart fruit esters, both cherry and plum..brown candy sugar covered in silky butteriness. Some floral hops lurk under the dark flavours...

Bottle: The aroma consists of dark fruits, chocolate, candi sugar, spice, and light alcohol. It pours a dark reddish-brown with some transparency when held to the light and two finger khaki head with decent retention. There is some sporadic dotting for lacing. The flavor starts with dark fruits and candi sugar. The finish has some spice, faint sweet citrus notes, and initially just a hint of alcohol. As it warms, the alcohol intensifies. The alcohol isnt overbearing or necessarily hot, but it could be toned down a touch. Its medium bodied with lively carbonation that manages to come across more soft than prickly. Overall, a tasty Quad, but not up there with the elites.
