Unobtanium is a barrel-aged English-style Old Ale that ages for six months in a bourbon barrel, soaking up all sorts of amazing whiskey character as well as hints of oak and vanilla. The name was taken from an old aerospace/engineering term for a specific material or object (often imaginary, impossible or highly improbable to obtain) needed to complete any given project. And, before you ask, we did not take the name from the elusive metal in Avatar. James Cameron reportedly named the substance as an inside joke to his fellow techie/gear-heads. Our version is much tastier, though.

Draft at the source. Opaque brown color. Aroma of bourbon. Taste is vanilla, spice, brownies. Nice.

Pours a dark, barely translucent mahogany with a thick but effervescent light tan head. Strong aroma has a syrupy overtone, almost a little too sweet, caramel with nutty and malty notes. Flavor explodes with caramel, sweet malt and molasses notes as well as subtle nutty and miso flavors. This would make a good dessert, it is so sweet - and yet there is a hint of hops in the background. Heavy, syrupy, viscous texture has a good amount of fizz. Finish is sweet, but not too sugary; hints of hops and malt let you know it is still a beer. See if you can obtain one.

Draft at the Huntsville Brewery. Pours very dark brown with a very thin head. Tastes like strong, sweet raisin, smooth alcohol, plums. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like raisins, alcohol, light cinnamon, and dried fruits.

Draft - Dark malts, caramel and light bourbon notes. Very dark brown with a light brown head. Dark toasted malts, booze, light yeasty sweetness and a long fruity ester finish. Vanilla and dark fruit are there, but the sweet booze is a put off for me.

Appearance: Slips out a dark brown, opaque body, with a slim, scant head the color of yellowed beige.

Smell: Darkened aggressive toastiness, charred nuts, caramel and molasses. Already, there’s a bit of sting from the alcohol, like getting caught by a spritz of hairspray. Fruity yeast esters throwing off notes of cherry, grilled plums.

Taste: Darkened bread crusts ground by a pestle and mortar. The dark caramel sweetness is robust. Earthy, nutty tone throughout. Touch of molasses. Maybe some oak qualities, but very little in the way of tastes I would have expected (or even half-expected) from the barrel aging. Moderate fruity esters. Sharp pop of alcohol, a little solventy. The finish is smooth, sweet and presents more of the belly-warming alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Fairly smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: Big deal.

22 oz bottle pours deep brown with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, whiskey and wood. Taste is malts and whiskey.

Rcvd in trade. The appearance has a dark brown close to black colored body with a slim half fingered white foamy head that dies within twenty seconds. There’s not much lacing but what there is tries to coat the glass but slides fairly quickly. The smell has some dark rich malts, toffee and coffee with a large amount of barrel aged bourbon-ness. Once it warms a bit I do start to get some woodiness. The taste is kinda sweet to woody almost a rich sort of maltiness that tries to add a bitterness but doesn’t really cut it. The aftertaste is a pretty rich woody/maltiness with a dry lingering woody finish. The palate sits about a medium to heavy with a fairly low carbonation. There’s a decent sweet wet finish, sessionability - well, ok, not bad, I could see having several pints in a session. Overall, this is an old ale and you know what - though old ales aren’t my go to style, this one was very good.

Draft. Brown with thin tan head. Aroma of strong sweetness, caramelized sugar, and fruits. Medium/heavy body with a cloying heavy syrupyness, molasses, and a strong solvent alcohol finish.

Draft pours brown with red hues and an off white head. Aroma is dried fruit, cherry, a good bit of alcohol, caramel, and slight spices. Taste is belgian spices, fruit, caramel, and a strong solvent like alcohol burn. Sweet finish and medium body. Judging by other reviews, maybe I just got a bad batch. The Alcohol was too sharp.
