COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Unobtanium is a barrel-aged English-style Old Ale that ages for six months in a bourbon barrel, soaking up all sorts of amazing whiskey character as well as hints of oak and vanilla. The name was taken from an old aerospace/engineering term for a specific material or object (often imaginary, impossible or highly improbable to obtain) needed to complete any given project. And, before you ask, we did not take the name from the elusive metal in Avatar. James Cameron reportedly named the substance as an inside joke to his fellow techie/gear-heads. Our version is much tastier, though.

Bottle @ Richard’s tasting. Copper colored pour with a white head. Nose is sweet caramel malt, brown sugar, vanilla, and oak. Minimal bourbon, some dark fruit, and alcohol. A lot of sweet sugar to the flavor. Caramel, brown sugar, and molasses. Notes of bourbon, vanilla, and oak. Some booze, cardboard, and dark fruit as well.

Ferris (15463) - Burnaby, British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 15, 2014
Draft - Dark malts, caramel and light bourbon notes. Very dark brown with a light brown head. Dark toasted malts, booze, light yeasty sweetness and a long fruity ester finish. Vanilla and dark fruit are there, but the sweet booze is a put off for me.

djd07 (14642) - Houston, Texas, USA - JUL 20, 2011
Bottle thanks to bleeng at the May tasting. Pours a dark ruby with a paperthin off white head that quickly diminishes to nothing. The aroma is cinnamon and hairspray. Alcohol upfront with a smoke vanilla flavor. A decent old ale from Straight to Ale.

3.8
Tmoney99 (14501) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAR 24, 2013
Bottle shared by brew3crew. Poured hazy brown color with an average frothy white head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate toasted sweet malt and bourbon wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy balanced bourbon sweet flavor with a medium to heavy complex sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex barrel version.

650ml bottle. Dark brown pour. Very ncie brew that has a bit of tartness, bust mostly waves of caramel, earth, and herbs with a nice sweet boziness that isn’t over the top, rather smooth acutally.

Bottle... This beer rocks!... Pours clear and deeply copper with a small, fleeting, mushroom-colored head. The aroma is a mélange of dried plum, demerara sugar, vanilla and candied dried dark fruits. Full-bodied with a sticky mouthfeel and soft carbonation. The flavor features maple, caramel and tons of whiskey, but with minimal boozy heat. Lengthy, tangy, nutty finish. Thanks to newcigarz for sharing this world-class beer!
