On tap at STA. Possibly my favorite STA offering. Very roasted with even some smoke coming through. Coffee notes and very subdued alcohol relative to the ABV. Bitterness was sufficient for the IPA label. Extremely balanced and all around tasty. This one deserves to be canned and shipped.

Aroma is chocolate heavy with heavy C-hop pine and grapefruit aromas, hints of grainy sweetness and that charred leather aroma you get from black malt. Sadly the flavor is alcohol forward however the citrus-piney hop flavors take over quickly with a sort of Cluster hop character along with the herbal element you get from heavy-hopping. The roasted malt character is prominent enough that I thought this beer was a hoppy american stout (Sierra Nevada Stout, Obsedian Stout, Rogue Shakespeare Stout), a good thing in this beer. There are traces of caramel with very little grassy or grainy character peeking through, yet while not apparent it is there as the beer is quite balanced in it’s maltiness to support the hop profile. The mouthfeel/palate is dead-on for this beer not thick, not thin as either could seriously detract, but with just enough viscosity to keep it shy of semi-chewy yet not too thin.
Overall dangerously drinkable for an 8% IPA which must be on the cusp of being a Double IPA or actually is. Coming from a fairly fresh keg I trust the hop character was true and I wish there was more hop aroma, yet the flavor in every way is dead-on. The alcohol is a problem but otherwise this is a truly wonderful beer, just shy of being great. Suttree (6385) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - NOV 30, 2013

Pint on tap. Opaque black with a lasting cover of foam. Aroma is orange zest, resin, a touch of cocoa and coffee. Taste is the same in a nice blend. Near-medium body has medium-high carbonation and finishes roasty and hoppily dry. Jon_Afghan (4) - Alabama, USA - MAR 12, 2013 does not count

On draft at Liq Ex. Very nice head that is long lasting. Dark, perfect in appearance. I am amazed how these guys nail various styles. The Black IPA definitly holds the bite of roasted barley and hops. Nice aroma as well. A nice IPA and good body to. This should definitely be a regular.

Draft at Mellow Mushroom. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Notes of pine on the nose. Fairly big notes of chocolate and pine with a hint of grapefruit on the finish. Hides it’s 8% well. Complex and nicely balanced. BeerHawk (1810) - Huntsville, Alabama, USA - DEC 10, 2011
Draft at the Nook. Black in the glass with a frothy tan head that had a thin layer lasting. Aroma of citrus rind and a roasty background. The flavor found dark chocolate, roast, and a hop balance. Tap at The Nook in Huntsville AL. Dark black with a tan head. Hoppy nose with some chocolate and malt notes. Taste is the same with a full rich foamy body. Well done.
