4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A really nice beer: Pours jet black with a thick tan/ brown head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, grapefruit and sweet citrus. Taste is on the sweeter end of the hop spectrum but balanced with the sweeter end of the black malt spectrum and you’ve got a damned fine refreshing beer.
On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear copper brown with a medium sized tan head. Soft toffee, cocoa, roast. Doesn’t look like a black IPA. Doesn’t really smell like a black IPA. Medium bodied, soft toast and roast, a hint of cocoa. Malt, sweetness. Not much “black” or “IPA” going on here. Still a tasty beer, but not what I was expecting. Roast, cocoa, chocolate, a bit of nutty malt. Not a ton here, but super easy drinking with some nice citrus notes.

A gusher. Pours dark brown with a medium sized tan head, good lacing. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate and earthy. Taste of chocolate, roasted malts, caramel and pine
A good beer but not a good example of a black ipa

[ As Strand Musashi Black IPA ].
Clear dark red - black brown color with a large, frothy, good lacing, fully to mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, dark malt, malt, moderate to heavy hoppy, pine, grapefruit, light licorice. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light heavy bitter with a long duration, licorice, roasted, pine, caramel. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
500ml bottle. Clear, dark mahogany colour with average to huge, thick, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Dark malty aroma has chocolate and coffee notes, slightly weak hoppy counterweight delivers disguised hints of orange and grapefruit, a touch of blackberry. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty, hints of coffee, slightly grassy, herbal, minimally biting bitter hoppy overtones, hints of blackberry; soft palate, a bit light bodied and almost close to watery. There’s leeway for progression. planky84 (3429) - Lee, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 24, 2014
Bottle from Ales by Mail. Black pour with a beige head. Aromas of chocolate, soy sauce, toffee, caramel and dark fruit. Lots of licorice and raisin in the flavour. Light bitter zing. Doesn’t quite fit my idea of a Black IPA, not enough bitterness for me. Still it was a tasty old brew. johndoughty (5543) - cheslyn hay, West Midlands, ENGLAND - NOV 14, 2014
Bottle. My first from this brewery. Black with a small head. Dry with hops in background. Quite interesting but a bit one dimensional. Not as powerful as I expected but still a reasonable if average beer. TBone (18225) - Pori, FINLAND - NOV 5, 2014

Dark brown color, good steady brownish head. Sticky aroma has ash, licorice, rye bread. Medium-bodied. Ashy, dark malty with some licorice. Bitter, harsh aftertaste. With its ashy-burned, bitter flavor, it is a bit unbalanced for my taste. Probably when it is fresh, hops taste better here.
Bottle @benzai. Black colour, small off-white to beige head. Smells roasty, peat, whisky, roasty. Tastes roasty, bitter, sweetish, hops, chocolate, slightly caramel, vanilla, almond. Medium to full body, soft to medium body.
