This Belgian Royal Stout was brewed as a tribute to one of America’s best pubs. Jennifer and Chris Lively who run the place may be proud of Ebenezer’s Pub. Not only do they have 35 beers on draught, most of these are hard to find Supreme Belgian Ales. Above that, they have one of the most extensive bottle-conditioned beer lists through different bottling dates we have ever seen. Not only can you drink almost any Belgian beer, the worlds best brewery’s are represented. A lot of the guests talk about the American Kulminator, yet with that difference that the Belgian inspired food, is simply great. Black Albert was brewed and crafted with a 100% Belgian ingredients. Pours a blacker than black beer with an inch of dark tan head that lingers as it cascades into itself. Nice aroma of bitter-sweet chocolate, fresh torrified coffee beans, barley, candy sugar, complex fruits, and floral hops. At the front, there is spiced baker’s chocolate, fresh mocha, caramel like barley touches, and underlying hints of dried fruits which marries the back of your palate and features a Top, and well integrated but not overbearing hop flavour. The after-taste is well balanced and shows a panorama of extreme sensations like chocolate and coffee bitters, a plum cake richness that covers the palate, and a crisp impression of hop bitters that brings elegance and freshness into this massive brew. Oh good god yes. This was wonderful. First aroma was straight black coffee at 5am, with a good amount of head for an Impy and carbonation to go with it. Pour looks good, but not chunky like some other big imperial stouts. Huge rich taste of coffee beans, massive chocolate everywhere and some hidden cherry and vanilla flavors. Hops that i can almost pick out underneath the huge malt bill. A slight burn in the aftertaste, which i cant tell if its the alcohol telling me its there, or the burning coffee. Does not taste like a 13%-er, maybe an 8 or so, all the alcohol is well hidden under the mountain of flavor. I wish i could pick this apart more, but god himself couldn’t tell you all the flavors in this. Syrupy on the mouth and clings to the glass just a little bit. The only thing lacking is the palate really, but its almost lacking in a good way because of the ease you can drink this. A great beer that doesn’t need any mellowing. Awesome.

330ml bottle. Pours full black, perfect steady tan head, good lacing. Aroma is rich, roasty, prunes, chocolatey, vanilla in background. Taste of chocolate liquour, very good espresso, dark fruits, prunes. Roasty bitterness and some hopiness in aftertaste. Some warming feel in late aftertaste. Bit oily palate. Full bodied, little bit below average carbo. Perfectly balanced beer. Well covered alcohol. World class imp stout and it's reasonable priced!

330ml bottle. Vintage 2016. Aroma of this beer coming into my nose right away after opening a bottle. Pours pitch black colour with beautiful brownish medium size head. Different aspects of chocolate and coffee, notes of berries and toffee in the aroma. It is hard to describe the complexity of the smell in my nose, but it is beautiful. Chicolate, coffee, caramel, notes of dark fruits, berries in the taste. Nice and crisp floral finish. Aspects of some calvados or sherry. Rich aftertaste of cocoa and chocolate. Silky and bubbly palate. So complex, but at the same time refine and balanced. Rather medium bodied, extremely drinkable and absolutely, ridicolously beautiful beer.

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2017 Great aroma: coffee, malt and chocolate. Taste : coffee again, malty bitterness/bitter chocolate and some dark fruit in the background. The beer is very dark, has a lightbrown head that stays for a while and the finish , coffee with cane sugar/ soft malt, lasts long. A real classic. A new favorite of mine.

Bottle from Sliterij Van Bergen, Eindhoven, Netherlands!
Bought in 2009, so its well aged. Pours deep black with a brown espresso head. Wide range of aromas. Coffee, Whiskey, chocolate, burnt malts, rhum. Taste is intense malty roasty, slight sweet, with lots of bourbon, vanilla and toasted malts. Long lasting burnt malty finish with bourbon and roasted coffee. Absolutely outstanding!!!

Bottle @home, (Clear out the cellar evening). Pours black, opaque, tan head. Nose fruit cake, Christmas cake, boozy, raisins, coffee, chocolate, licorice, ooooft. Taste is massive, there is a bitterness that gives way to a sweet finish, the taste is as the nose, huge fruit cake vibe and massive booze, you know this a strong beer and it does not hide it.

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2017 At ’In de Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst’ (bottle shared with Anke, luckily). Pours hazy jet back with a small, lasting, dark beige head. Intense smell. The aroma contains dark chocolate, coffee roast, caramel, hops & spices, roasted malt, ’jenever’ or ’whisky’, licorice, figs & raisins, some bread. It tastes heavy to medium chocolatey sweet and light roasted bitter, with a toasty, light hoppy finish; warming (and surprisingly well-hidden) alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Extremely tasty and deeply complex. What else can I say than that this is world-class?
