Draught @ BBF’11:
Brown head on top of a black beer.
Smell medicine, elastoplast and a hint of roasted malts and spices.
Taste is way better than smell, really spicy, roasted malts, warm, coal, smokey, burned wood, tar and liquorice.
Good and firm bitter aftertaste of liquorice
Low to medium carbo, soft creamy mouthfeel, full body and a creamy texture.
Heavy spicy taste but well balanced.
They hid the alcohol very well! Benzai (16681) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - OCT 1, 2011
Sampled at Borefts Beer Festival @ De Molen, Bodegraven. Pitch black, opaque color, light brown head. Smell alcohol and some liquor, peat smoke and roastyness. Taste heavy alcohol, peat, smoke and roastyness. Strong carbonation, but somehow still a soft mouthfeel considering the 39%ABV. Full body. Ober (2811) - Bommelerwaard, NETHERLANDS - SEP 30, 2011
Draft @ 3th Borefts 2011. A pitch black colored beer, with a dark beige/brown head. The aroma of peat, some tobacco, burned malt, with wood notes. The taste of peat, wood, alcohol, burned malt. A little burny. The aftertaste is bitter for a while, peat and some notes of alcohol. Barrelbelly (751) - BELGIUM - SEP 28, 2011
Pitch black and very thick. Aroma of whisky, wood and leather. The black albert can not really be retrieved in the taste. The taste is very much overwhelming with a whisky taste. phredrik (1024) - Copenhagen (formerly Aalborg), DENMARK - SEP 26, 2011
Tap @ Borefts Beer Festival. This beer is sick. I have literally never had anythins like this. Pours thick black, and not just "black", but I mean black as the conscience of Jack The Ripper with the darkest head I’ve ever seen on a beer. Aroma has lots of smoke, intense liquorice, islay whisky, but also smooth chocolate, fudge, burnt sugar, intense dark chocolate and strong liquorice. Taste is MASSIVE with liquorice and smoke, lots of chocolate, intense coffee and liquorice. The palate exceeds anything I’ve ever tried before, both in massiveness and thickness. It literally drank like a smoothie, but with carbonation. It was insane. I feel sick liking this, but this was easily one of the festival’s best beers for me. (Not one place in my notes have I written alcohol. Either I was too drunk which I wasn’t, or this is a fucken milestone in high ABV beers which it is)
