Black Mess was processed the double icebock way to proceed to 39% of Abv. This ale still drinks as a real beer, containing carbonation and a nice rocky head, the alcohol is very well hidden.

On tap at BBF 2011 and CBC 2012 (from notes) Look: the beer pours a pitch black color with a nice thick, creamy, sticky dark-brown head. This beer leaves a coating on the inside of the glass after drinking. Kind of like the Darklord, only Struise achieved this without additives in the beer (like glycerol, PEG) Smell: Heavy on roasted malts and coffee. Vanilla, smoke and peat from the barrel. Taste: Similar to the smell, the taste is heavy on roasted malts and coffee, with notes of chocolate and caramel. The influence from the barrel is present with smoked and peaty flavors. However, although the flavors are amazing, the heavy boozy taste of pure ethanol puts it all into the background. Mouthfeel: super thick, creamy, sticky with medium-low carbonation Overall: Great smell , but the pure, burning ethanol is too much present for me in the taste. I work in a laboratory, and the beer tastes like the smell of the 70%-98% ethanol that I use to decontaminate my instruments from bacteria. Of course, it is not surprising that an ABV this high cannot be hidden, but it shows that this time Struise went too far with pimping beers. The BD5 is perfectly balanced, this one not. This is not beer, but just a strong liquor. If I am in the mood of drinking strong liquor though, I will never refuse this one!

sample provided at the Moeder Lambic cellar session 2015. poured an oily black colour with a non to long lasting small dark head. first notice are clear salty peat notes. which i personally have net get in the regular black mes. smell is alcoholic like a peated whisky, but still with a combination of dark sticky malts, chocolate, oak, and toffee notes. some licorice as well shining trough. mouthfeel is full bodied, with still a little bit of carbonation to it. wow.. what a difference between the new cdos / baos version. this is way more enjoyable

From old notes. From tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. Black color with beige head. Aroma is malty, roasted, chocolate, alcoholic, some smoked notes. Sweet and biter like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation. Alcohol seemed like 15% not 39%!!

18/IV/15 - on tap @ Struise Schooltje (Oostvleteren) - BB: n/a (2015-449) Thanks to Fokke for the beer! Thanks to Bart and Jolien for driving!

Clear dark brown to black beer, small creamy beige to brown head, unstable, non adhesive. aroma: very peated, smoky, caramel, dried fruits. MF: soft carbon, full body, very thick, syrupy texture, almost chewable. Taste: caramel, very sugary, heavily peated, hoppy, some dark chocolate, pretty dry. Aftertaste: peated, caramel, sweet, bit of alcohol, more peat, pretty bitter and hoppy finish.

Totally pitch black. Insanely boozy....tobacco. Well, this is a mess insane! Like a campfire, smoked chocolate, marshamallows, a lot of rye and bourbon whiskey. some tree-nuts, maybe walnut/almonds. very interestin but also very extreme. Double Black is balanced compared to this :)

Messy in the making, about 30%, straight from the barrel @ Schooltje. Black color. Dark head (not much). Aromas: whisky-ish, alcohol, sweet, wood, licorice/drop, something herbal? Flavor is like licorice, droppig, moderate sweet, somewhat salty. Very strong alcohol feel. Dense mouthfeel, syruppy. Not there yet, but anyway a bit over the top for me.

Biggest want now finally happening. Pours jet black with a small, dark head. Smell is intense peat, yet still in the ok zone to me. Taste is peat, byt also dark malts and bitterness. Very balanced. Drinks like a 10 percenter, wtf? Acxording to Urbain, because of the temperature. To me this is juat proof yet again of great brewing skills. What a mouthfeel! Perfect carbo, intense and long lasting aftertaste. Even though it is to peated for my taste, i can only commit that i secretly do like it. If obly it were for the experience and the mouthfeel of it. Thnx Urbain!

On tap at CBC2012. Deep black in the glass, very small head. Heavy malty and alcoholic aroma. Starts extremly malty, strong, alcoholic. Intense malty-earthy notes. Notes of strong coffee. Burning finish. All in all a bit too much, should be more balanced. I liked the Double Black more.
