A blend of Kate The Great (10.79% ABV) and Black Albert (13% ABV), brewed by master brewer Todd Mott of the Portsmouth Brewery in USA and Urbain Coutteau of Struise. This time our beer was fractionally frozen to -15 C over a period of 20 days. This method allows the water which is present in beer, slowly but surely to be separated from the alcohol, and allowing the volume % to rise. Another Eisbock process but modified a la Struise, still allows the result to be called beer. "Special K" has previously been aged 10 months in Noval Port barrels before undergoing the Eisbock process.

Almost opaque dark brown beer, small tan head. Palate is viscous and quite silky but still has good fine carbonation. Rich dark malts, soft and thick. A bit of coffee liqueur and dark chocolate liqueur. Trace of marmite. Spice. Very mild wood. A little blackcurrant and surpressed red berry fruits. Malt cream before a smooth and slightly spicy finish. Impressively drinkable for a 22% beer. I remain frustrated with Struise, they appear to have retreated from most of Europe and the few beers that do make their way out are nothing like as good as this.

Draft at 17th Kerstbierfest at Essen, rated in English. Syrrupy stuff, as black as Urbains soul. ;-) variegated brown head with great retention. Aroma of chocolate covered biscuits, licorice, vanilla, burnt espresso. Taste is straightforward alcohol and coffee. Boozy compared to other dark twists from Struise.

Tap at the Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. Pours black with a thick, beige cream head. Like topping. Nose holds musty cocoa, earth and roast. Medium sweet with lots of dirt, earth, some dark fruits, some baking cocoa. Very mellow considering the ABV. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Mild warming finish with earth, raisins, cocoa. Nice, and inordinately mellow.

On tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. Looking just gorgeous, a dense, finger-thick, light tan head sits on top of a black body, releasing aromas of roasted malts, dried fruits, something sugary, a hint of vanilla, some licorice and a quite pleasant alcohol scent. A bit too warming maybe, both in the nose and the mouth, but its not extreme in any way, almost making me suspicious of the claimed 22% ABV. Roasted malts and sweetness, some dried fruits and licorice, and a touch of vanilla in the flavor, with a pleasant bitterness showing up after a while, combating with alcohol and sweetness for attention. Full body, as expected. Certainly a beer worth drinking, but its also a beer you should share, no matter what the bottle size is. 120511
