bottle pours dark brown medium light tan head. Aroma is strange metallic, wax and some booze. Flavor is very fruity. Strawberry, lots of honey and sour peach. Interesting, but good.

decaturstevo (6343) - decatur, Tennessee, USA - APR 25, 2010
Brown pour with tan head and lace. Earthy peaty aroma. Paint, sour, dirt flavor. A thin and watery beer. Not much

Rciesla (5607) - Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA - APR 11, 2010
Bottle. Pours a mahogany body with an off white head. Dark fruit initially, raisins, spicy, plums and cinnamon. But the texture of the palate is really waxy and plastic like, very drying the champagne yeast creates an almost olive like tone. This really different comparatively i preferred the previous version.

Bottle… RBWG ‘10… Pours mostly clear and very dark. Sits black in the glass. Very little head to mention. Regarding the aroma; I’m unable to pull anything from my sample. Certainly inoffensive; just not much going on olfactory-wise. Medium-bodied and a touch oily with modest carbonation. Lots of chocolate and caramel sweetness is nicely balanced by fairly tart, woody acidity. Low bitterness. Finishes tangy and sweet. An odd bird, this barley wine. I wonder how many Struise beers I’ve felt this way about. Certainly an entertaining brewery. Thanks to fata2683 and the guys at Struise for providing the bottle!

Big thanks to fata for bringing this to RBWG 2010! The aroma is vinegar and boozy and the flavor is sweet and sour phenolics, plasticky, powdery, not a huge fan.

bu11zeye (13215) - Frisco (Dallas), Texas, USA - MAR 30, 2010
(750ml bottle) Pours a dark brown (near black) body with a medium tan head. Aroma of champagne yeast, caramel, vinous, and mustiness. Flavor of red licorice, caramel, fruit, champagne, alcohol, and vinegar. I prefer the original Aardmonnik/Earthmonk.

harrisoni (19318) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - MAR 29, 2010
Bottle at Pre ZBF 2010. Earthmonk with champagne yeast. It is weird. Biscuity. Almost not sour at all. Very bready from the champagne yeast. It’s odd and that is the word that I kept saying as I drank it and talked about it. Good bread/yeast, some brandy like characters. But not really like Earthmonk at all. Odd, as I say, but I found the bready character very drinkable.

Tap at Pre-ZBF ... deep black ... raisin and prune nose ... chocolate malts ... roat malts ... deep dark fruits ... little toffee ... little vanilla... pretty good

smith4498 (3673) - Winter Springs, Florida, USA - MAR 22, 2010
RBWG 2010. Pours dark reddish brown with thin tan head. Fruity and sour aroma. Flavors of vinegar, dark fruit, wood and strange mustiness. Medium body with soft carbonation. Not very good by Struise standards.
