- Joe Tucker, RateBeer.com

Struise-Mikkeller is as we said in the past "Best of two worlds". We delivered an IPA with 130 IBU (Batch I), 150 IBU (Batch II), 163 IBU (Batch III), 216 IBU (Batch IV), but a bitterness hidden the Struise way, counter balanced by maltyness, alcohol and rest sugars.

Bottle sampled with Mad_indian. Pours hazy copper with a solid off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, belgian yeast and spices, biscuit, citrus, and piney hops. The flavor is smooth, biscuit, caramel, belgian spices, citrus, pine bitterness in the finish. Good body, alcohol is well hidden, good mouthfeel, what a perfect blend.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2016 Ill admit that as a designer Ive never loved Struises labels, and Elliot Brew might be the most uninspired of the bunch. Yet, there is something incredibly special for me, when I see the ostrich-adorned crest peering out of that dark shelves of my neighboring liquor store, here in the mean streets of Los Angeles. Its been ten years since I first visited Carlo and Urbain after the launch of the brewery, at the beginning of my beer-drinking journey. I couldnt have been luckier to sample some of their first brews, and I am so proud to see their work spread far and wide across the globe. Elliot Brew pours a beautifully muddy orange with a perfectly creamy off-white cap. It bills itself as a double IPA, but the nose cant fool me. This is a Belgian beer. Between the layers of hops, lots of brown sugar, spices and estery aromas shine through. Bubble gum, blackberries, cinnamon, coffee this is so much more subtle than the average American hop bomb. The flavor is surprisingly mellow. A smooth, creamy layer of vanilla custard forms the basis for a floral tingle of hops to shine. There is a Heisenbergian quality to the hops in this beer. They seem to only appear when you look for them. If you do, their character is sharp as a knife, and brings a satisfying bitterness that cuts through the mid palate with vigor. Putting your mind off of them, the deeper tones of molasses and cream seem to overtake the experience. Its kaleidoscopic nature makes this a fun beer to drink and explore. In typical fashion, Struise have created a completely original interpretation of the style.

bottle, aged for some number of years (3 or 4? Cant remember). Pours cloudy brownish-orange with fluffy head. Little IPA character left; mostly Belgian, brown sugar, some citrus. Boozy. Nice beer.

Pours clear coppery with a fairly thick buff head. Aroma features caramel, fruity and hoppy tones. Fruity flavor has firm woody hop and subtle fresh malt notes. Mouthfeel has average fizz and body. One of my beer pals won this at a HMOG and generously shared it at Alpharetta.

2013 vintage. Aroma is hopps and straw. Flavor is super hoppy, slightly sweet, with a slight bitter bite. Very crushable for the age. Pours dark brown / copper with a thick sticky tan head. Had at home out of a bottle. Awesome IPA

(Struise / Mikkeller Elliot Brew) 330 ml bottle at home, served into a shaker, vintage 2013. Dark orange colour on the body, with lazy activity in it, a bit hazy. Two fingers of thick off-white head on top, with very good retention. Aroma of caramel malts, oranges, biscuit, faint citrus, light tangerine. Taste is quite bitter, with oranges, orange peel, citrus, grapefruit, pine, caramel malts, notable alcohol, grass, biscuit. Medium thick body, good carbonation. Very dry on the palate. Very good.

1/24/2009 1:37:39 PM Bottle from Cracked Kettle. Opal body with frothy head. Very hoppy nose. Bitter taste with lots of hops. A wonderful IPA. Fruity and ginger, sure. But hops and bitter aplenty. A superb beer. Love it.

On tap. Pours orange with white off head. A bit piney, herbal, orange peel, tangerine, peach, floral and a bit caramel. Nice bitterness. Stays coating the mouth but it gets never harsh. I am not sure if the whipped cream head with a low carbonation body, much like Guinness, is a good idea. I kind of missed a more intense carbonation once and a while to push around all that hoppy goodness. A great brew anyway

130 IBU. Hazy reddish amber. Thin cream coloured head. Aroma is caramel, honey, rye bread, apple, hay and some alcohol. Taste is rye bread, orange, honey, grass, apple. Holds up well even though the hops are mellowed out by age.
