In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

tastes a hell of a lot like rochefort 10, only less subtle. a big chewy malty and spicy ale, as brown as a beer can taste brown: gravy, chocolate, mole sauce, brown sugar, etc. rich and opulent to a degree few belgian beers attempt (perhaps why it’s a ratebeer sort of beer) but still dry. the thing that is really cool about it is a kind of winelike fruity sourness that winds the palate up. salty too. plenty of coriander evident, maybe something peppery too. perhaps a bit heavy where i like belgian ales to be zippy and frothy and phenolic.

Dark brown with a short head. Caramel, yeast, dried fruit and spicey aroma. Taste is dried fruit, chocolate and spices.

330ml bottle. Clear dark chestnut color. Small size, brown head, stays as a ring. Alcohol, sweet, caramel, plums, Belgian yeast in aroma. Roast, bready, alcohol, plums, sour raisins, bready in taste. Sour, Belgian yeast and sweet in aftertaste. Boozy and sourish mouthfeel. Soft fizz as carbonation. Solid brew.

11.2oz bottle. Pours a nearly black dark brown with a small, quickly-dissipating tan head - disappears entirely almost immediately. Aroma is caramel, booze, yeast, very light cherry, chocolate, plum, a little vanilla, and just a hint of red wine. Taste is berries, fig, plum, light coffee, booze, some caramel, yeast, some chocolate, some spice, some brown sugar, and a hint of red wine. Light bitterness. A tiny bit of tartness. Yeast lingers pleasantly. Full body. Medium carbonation. Oily, smooth mouthfeel. New facets appear with every sip.

Dark brown, mahogny in apperance. Very thin head, goes away quickly. Amazing aroma, dried fruit dominated by figs. Taste gives more of the same, figs plums, cherries and a slight touch of coffee. A bit more yeasty than the typical dark strong ale, which is to the better in my opinion. Very, very good!

Pours a fairly murky deep brown. Nose is amazing, so much going on. Fruity and caramelly, plum, fig, raisins some indiscernible sweet notes. Can't think of another beer that smells close to this. Taste follows the nose and is way more fruit forward than yeast forward. There is a bit of sourness but, to me, little alcohol heat. Full bodied and medium carbonation. Very unique beer.

Vintage 2016: Duzo przypraw, suszonych owocow i belgijskich akcentow.

Bottle, Vintage 2013, to celebrate my 5th anniversary of joining RateBeer - thank you, Nils! :-) Pours cloudy coffee brown with airy dark tan head. Complex, dusty aroma with notes of caramel, chocolate, yeast, malt and fruit. Sweetish flavour of fruit, yeast and caramel malt, enriched by bitter notes of coffee and hops and some dusty touches - the bottle is well past the BBD :-) Lingering, bitter and estery aftertaste with sweetish, fruity hints. A truly grand beer, Gentlemen! Cheers!

330ml bottle, 2013 vintage, enjoyed at home. Pours dark brown with little head, thick with some residue in the glass. Aroma is incredibly complex and has astounding depth. Caramel, figs, plums, pepper, spices, Candi sugar, dark roasted malts. Heavy body with a nice thick and intense mouthfeel. Flavour is similar, with incredibly complexity and depth. Caramel, very sweet, lots of interesting sugar flavours, spices, plum, coffee hints, kardamom, cinnamon, and in general quite some spiciness and roastiness. Finishes warming with a fruity, slightly boozy and roasty finish. Amazing stuff.
