COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ale was brewed back in 2008, and in collaboration with brew master Ryohei Sugawa San from Rio Brewing & Co. Our goal was to brew a Belgian dark golden blond quadrupel with an enormous potential of aromas and flavors, and added complexity due to oak barrel aging. Bourbon barels from Kentucky were chosen due to their very special soft roast quality and noble vanilla flavors. Year upon year, different quality controls were executed, and we finally decided to bottle condition this very special ale in May 2012. Another three moths of cold maturing was done at the brewery, so we could be sure about the absolute quality before releasing to our customers.

(Rating #10,400) Bottle... Pours dark, hazy and burnt-orange with a mid-sized, creamy, white head. The aroma is a malt and yeast-driven blend of caramel, sourmash whiskey, dates and marmalade. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and Key West carbonation. The flavor features bittersweet bourbon, candied dates, figs, golden raisins and toffee. Finishes bourbony, but quite smooth and silky with a modest amount of lingering, tannic bitterness. Pulls up just shy of being world-class. Bottles generously shared by darkguardian!

2014 bottled (2011 Reserva). Body is dark brown with a white thin head which disappears quickly. Nose remembers to oak, red wine (St Emilion, Bordeaux). Taste is vanilla probably from the bourbon aged process with very long aftertaste, a little bit boozy at the end of the bottle. One of the best beers i’ve ever had.

Pours a slightly hazy, dark copper color with bright mahogany edges and a one finger, frothy off-white head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Sporadic spots and streaks of soapy lace left behind. Interesting aroma with a subtle barrel presence that’s integrated into the quad notes of the base beer. Spicy bourbon, delicate oak and silky vanilla bean along with peppery spice, bready yeast, sweet booze and dark fruit esters. Barrel presence has faded over the years but there’s still some burnt oak, spicy spirit and vanilla bean in the nose. Zesty spice with ginger, clove and pepper. Some bready yeast, boozy sweetness and light fruit esters, notably pear, apple, cherry and cream. Also, a touch of caramel sweetness with some leathery malt. Fuller end of medium body with slight creamy texture and a subtle barrel character that’s nicely integrated into the tripel characteristics. Somewhat dry wit faint oak and a lot of silky vanilla. Bourbon notes have faded a bit but there is still some spicy and sweet spirit flavor. Perfume-y with zesty spice, light fruit, sweet malt and boozy heat in the finish. Strong white pepper with ginger and coriander followed by apricot, strawberry and cream and green apple. Slightly yeasty with hints sourdough bread followed by toffee and caramel malt sweetness. Boozy finish but not too hot. Some warmth in the chest but overall ABV is decently masked. Easy drinking, unique and complex with bourbon barrel notes playing off of tripel characteristics. Very interesting beer.
