Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Beautifull dark beer with a lot of different notes and a fruity bitter aroma ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, 330 ml, vintage 2013. Pours murky dark slightly reddish brown. Very cloudy. Shin sheen of dark tan foam which quickly dissipates. A few tiny bubbles visible. Lacing is thick and oily looking, leaving a brown hue on the glass. There’s also some slight alcohol legs going on. Nose is sweet, very malty, fruity, woody. Wholemeal bread, cake, salted caramel, dark fruits, candied/cooked orange, lot of muscavado sugar, tobacco, assorted spices including cinnamon, vanilla, ginger, fair bit of bourbon and oak. Hints of soy sauce, smoked meat, red wine developing as it warms. Taste is sweet, sugary, fruity up front with caramel, cake, vanilla, candied/cooked blood orange and pineapple. This gives way to some richer, darker, more bitter notes of mollasses, port wine, berries, cherry, dark fruits, winter spices, something slightly medicinal (lemon cough drops?), oaky tannins, grassy hops, ending on a long, warming, sticky, moderately bitter finish with lingering vanilla and oak. Body is medium-full, texture is smooth and silky, carbonation is minimal and there’s a slight pleasant alcohol burn. Gorgeous stuff.

Przeterminowana butelka. Warto było potrzymać. Nos tworzy mnóstwo suszonych owoców: figi, rodzynki, śliwki, wanilia, toffi, ciemny chleb, kawa moccha, ciut ziemi i szlachetnego alkoholu. W ustach rasowy quadrupel z suszkami owocowymi, toffi, daktyle, miód gryczany. Z czasem wanilia, i swoje odciska beczka ale i przyprawy: gałka muszkatołowa, muśnięcie cynamonu. Ciało potężne, gładkie, aksamitne. Piękne piwo.

Nutty, bread, toffee, raisins, something dry and sour at the end of the flavor for added complexity, rather boozy

Aroma, is not a lot going on a bit fruit. Deep redish brown, with absolutely no head. Sweet raisin, a little booze caramel brown sugar, dark fruit. Very balanced but not the most complex. Lacks a little fullness in the body

Woodsy, raisin-like smell and taste with some smoke, anise, malt, plums, and nuts coming through as well. Decently strong alcohol burn, though this doesn’t usually put me off. Full-flavoured with medium mouthfeel.

330 ml bottle “2013Vintage” bought at HK Brewcraft in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Looks: Clear deep reddish brown colour with a layer of dirt-like yeast sediments; Less than one-quarter finger head with residual soapy light beige foam which fades in 20 seconds; Fair sticky lacing with near zero carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant and sweet dark malt, with strong dessert wine, red wine, Bourbon, immense caramel, sticky toffee, strong alcohol, strong plums, strong raisins, sugar, spices, barrels, bread, yeast and light grass. Lovely sweetness!

Taste: Strong sweet dark malt, with strong green grapes, moderate Port wine, red wine, Bourbon, strong alcohol, very strong plums, raisins, strong caramel, toffee, floral, strong molasses, strong spices, fair barrels, light biscuits, lemon, medium bitter hops and grass.

Body: Close to full body. Quite thick and slightly oily palate.

Mouth Feel: Very good dark maltyness - well-attenuated - in a very slick background. Full mouthful of green grapes followed closely by intense dark fruits. Bourbon took a back seat as red wine and port wine factors are much stronger and nicer. Good caramel with surprisingly moderate medioum sweetness with further sips. Spicy and lemony to round. Excellent!

Booze: the 11% abv is upfront and strong, must be treated with respect but is mostly nice comfy red wine smoothness instead of harsh liquor at this level. Sweetness and liquorices are moderate due to high attenuation. Blended well with the Bourbon barrels. Great!

Hoppiness: Spices and light grass in nose. Floral, strong spices, lemon and grass in taste; Bitterness is fairly strong for an abrupt, medium astringent sweet-bitter malty finish.

After Taste: Quite dry. Winey spicy and fairly bitter to mouth.

Comments: This is so different from other rich dark Struise Ales I’ve had - a strong dark ale base which is lean and mean with hearty dark fruits and caramel characters. The Bourbon barrels landed some unexpected fruity vineyards and red wineyness. Strong comfy booze with just right sweetness. Spicy hops is never far behind. A unorthodox Quad which is nice in its own way. Highly recommended!
