Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Dark brown-red colored with vanishing head. Raisinny aroma with thin licorice, yeast and thin alcohol, sweet one. Medium to full bodied. Flavor is more licoricy with raisins still, aftertaste is bit hopped with licorice lasting.

average frothy light brown head. fair lacing. mostly diminishing. muddy thick dark reddish-brown body. aroma: moderate malty, dark chocolate, pine, raisin, plum, red wine, alcohol. Initial flavor: light sweet acidic. Final flavor: light sweet acidic moderate bitter; long duration. Palate: medium full body, creay texture, lively carbonation, heavy alcoholic finish. Spicy phenols may be present, but usually have a peppery quality. The malt is rich and strong, and can have a deep bready-toasty quality often with a deep caramel complexity. The fruity esters are strong to moderately low, and can contain raisin, plum, fig notes. Acidez de ameixa vermelha fresco. Bem alcoolica, alto aquecimento alcoolico, nao esconde. Final bem alcoólico lembra steinhaeger. Dulçor maltado. Menos doce que o esperado. Dulçor lembra também frutas secas. Álcool excessivo esconde nuances (como a de chocolate e amadeira que aparecem posteriormente) e diminui a drinkability. 170 s

Acheter à tabac&co palais des bières dans famiflora à Dottignies. Bouteille de 33cl. Couleur Brown reflet black et ambré . Peu de mousse voir inexistante. Au nez : notes céréales intense , Bourbon et un pointe de vanille . En bouche : c'est bien le céréales et malts qui donne le ton ! Beaucoup de corps , une sensation Bourbon présente . Arrière bouche vanillé . Malts torréfié agréable et puissant. Génial !

[email protected], Tampere, Finland. Bold and soft, slightly sour nuances of plum, fig, caramel, some vanilla and a hint of slightly burned malts and booze. A bit waxy feel. Balanced. Wide taste spectrum with medium/long malty aftertaste with dark dry fruits. Medium/strong body with low/medium carbonation. Overall, high quality quad with a sweeter touch. Could be even more complex.

Bottle @ Nuetnigenough: Dark with notes of caramel and sweet figs. Smooth and so so easy to drink. Alcohol hidden well. Aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels. Tasty!

Bottle shared with the KL tasting crew. 10.5%. Poured a hazy medium brown with a thin broken off white head. The aroma is malt, rich red berry fruit, light toffee. The flavour is moderate sweet with a super rich tart red berry warm alcoholic, light bitter bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle vintage 2013. Dark ruby brown no head. Nutty malt, cherry aroma. Strong malt forward, the yeast is doughy and mixes with the chocolatey wooden barrel character really well. Tobacco and wood. Super complex, dark malt, wood, cacao in the finish. Totally rad complex De Struise brew. Chocoalte, malts, wood barrel and slightest booze. Special.

Copenhagen 19/8 2017. 33cl bottle from Den Belgiske Ølbutik. Two monks and a knight on the label. Pours very dark brown with very small off-white head. Disappears quite fast. No lacing at all. Aroma is very sweet and quite intense. Very pronounced alcohol, caramel, whiff of basement and sweet, sweet marzipan. Soft carbonation and thick oily palate. Flavor is heavy sweet. No detectable bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet caramel and marzipan. A very sweet alcohol bomb. For them who like their alcohol draped in sugar and more booze.

Aromat: bardzo bogaty i wyrazny, suszone sliwki, daktyle, figi, rodzynki, swieze winne i soczyste winogrona, karmel, gruszki. Slodki ale tez owocowo soczysty co dodaje mu rzeskosci. Wyglad: ciemna miedz wpadajaca w kolor ciemnobrunatny, nieprzejrzyste, piana bardzo mala, zanika zaraz do absolutnego zera. Smak: slodki i tresciwe, bardzo bogaty smak, niosacy wiele smakowych doznan. Jest tu karmel, sa rodzynki, suszone sliwki, daktyle figi, suszone gruszki i jablka. Po chwili pojawia sie troche czekolady. W kontrze do mocnej slodyczy soczyste, cierpkie swieze owoce, glównie winogrona, owoce lesne, jezyny, jagody, zurawina.Taniczne nuty debowe od beczki, ale ta beczka tu jest dosyc dyskretna. Moje bylo dobrze ulozone, alkoholu nie czulem, ciala sporo choc moglo byc jeszcze wiecej. Piwo bogate, ciekawe, bardzo smaczne. 8/4/8/4/17

Aus der Flasche (Vintage 2013) 2015-10 getrunken. Auch hier hat die Faßreifung für eine tolle Balance an Holznoten und kaum Süße gesorgt. Verdammt lecker das Zeug. Aus der Flasche (Vintage 2013) 2016-11 getrunken. In diesen dunkelbraunen Schwergewicht haben die Woodford Fässer eine ganz leichte Süße übriggelassen. Auch hier hat die Faßlagerung ein sehr rundes und edles Bier entstehen lassen. Hier steht klar eine fette Malznote im Vordergrund. Definitiv süffiger als der Struise Blue Monk. Aus der Flasche (Vintage 2013) 2017-04 getrunken. Fast schon ein Alterbekannter dieses Quadrupel und was soll ich sagen "JA - ich liebe es! Und heute durch seine Ausgewogenheit der Tagessieger.
