Saint Amatus, also called St. Aim, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

33 cl bottle, 2013 vintage, bottled 21/06/2016. Color is very dark brown with a cola-colored head that is gone almost immediately. Aromas of plum, dark fruit, kissel, oak. Taste of vanilla, cough suryp, malt, port wine. Alcohol is well hidden, just very warming in the stomach. Low carbonation, sticky sweet and smooth mouthfeel.

Aroma is raisin, red wine, honey, herbs, bourbon, milk chocolate. Medium to heavy sweet, light to medium bitter, medium fruity sour. Finish is long lasting fruity chocolate medium bittersweet, medium alcohol warmth. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Quite heavy, strong flavor, well balanced, nice one.

Medium aroma of malts, caramel, wood, whiskey, dried fruit, liquorice, chocolate and roasted malts.

Turbid/opaque red/dark brown beer with heavy yeast and with no/a slight beige head.

Starts heavy sweet with malts, caramel, wood, whiskey, dried fruit, liquorice and chocolate; ends slightly bitter and dry with roasted malts.

This beer is intense, complex and balanced. Thanks to that long aging on that bourbon barrel and the rather heavy amount of roasted malts, this almost does not feel like a Belgian beer and even less like a Quad. No matter what style it gets labeled as, this beer is great beyond belief. The aroma could have been stronger and the head could be bigger, though that last one could be forgiven thanks to that aging.

Donker bruin/ zwart kleurig bier. Afdronk is redelijk droog. Aangename licht prikkelend. Zeer goed.

Vintage 2013. Aroma: old oak, whiskey. Taste: first taste is sour wine, then some sweetness, spice, alcohol and bitterness. Clearly differs from other Quadrupels I have drunk because of this whisky taste. Maybe aged too much in that barrel? Too sour.
