Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Bottle, from Dranken Geers. 33cl. Pours dark brown/black with a dark brown head. Dark malts obviously present in the foam, as well as in the nose. Sweet coffee, caramel, burnt nuts ... Aroma when sipping a bit liquorish, fusels. Then esters show up. Belgian yeast profile says hi. Mouthfeel very good, slick and warming, medium to low carbonation. Very good.

Smaskigt!

Another gem from respectable Struise. It pours deep brown color with minimum sized tan head. Weak retention. Smell is dominated by molasses and candied sugar. Plum, licorice and earthy yeast are in background. Strong taste is fairly sweet, but it finishes semi-dry. Tastes strongly of caramel, dark fruits and licorice. Heavy and velvety on the palate, full bodied. Strongly warming and flawless finish. I excepted more complexity, but it's still classy brew.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2018 Vintage 2013. W aromacie czerwone owoce, czekolada, melasa, estry, czerwone wino, wanilia. Z wyglądu ciemna czerwień wpadająca w brąz, obrączka kremowej piany. W smaku kandyzowane owoce, rodzynki, figi, melasa, syrop owocowy, nuty drewniane, na finiszu delikatne nuty burbonowe. Bardzo słodkie, intensywne. Ciało dość gęste, lekko grzeje w przełyk, ale ułożone. Ogólnie złożone, przyjemne, deserowe piwo

Pours copper, thick, small cream head with little lacing. Aroma of bread, wood, caramel and toffee. Tastes sweet with some tartness, toffee, caramel, ripe fruit, whiskey, wood and spices. Booze well hidden. Thick and oily, very low carbonation, astringent finish. Tasty and dangerous.

2013 vintage bottle. Hazy brown beer with minimal tan head. Aroma of raisins, caramel, vanilla, dried dark fruits, prunes, red fruits, grapes. Taste is medium+ sweet, light+ bitter and light+ tart, of dried fruits, raisins, red fruits, red wine, with notes of caramel, vanilla, wood, whisky. Dried fruits, spice in the finish. Medium to full body, oily texture, average carbonation. Very good quad, although a bit too sour for me.
