Saint Amatus, also called St. Aim, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Beautiful aroma of sweet dry fruits and a hint of alcohol. Deep amber-brown in color with a small tan head. Extremely smooth drinking, with outstanding balance. Nice moderate sweetness with a great subtle hop balance. Not particularly spicey, just smooth off the barrel and good!

2013: Barwa bursztynowa, piana praktycznie żadna po paru sekundach. Aromat owoce suszone, karmel, słodycz, cukier brązowy i alko, - pomieszany mocno, średnio intensywny. W smaku susz, alko, słodycz. W sumie szału nie ma, spodziewałem się dużo więcej a jest pomieszanie z poplątaniem. Może jak ten alkohol się ułoży będzie lepiej...

2013 bottle. Deep reddish brown with a coat of beige head that hangs around awhile. 3+ Aroma of chocolate, bread, red wine, figs, raisins, coriander seed, vanilla/ oak/ whisky. Sweet with bread, whisky, dried and stewed fruit, some herbal and earthy touches. Lowish bitterness with some wood and licorice at the end. Whisky creeps up. Complex but without obvious end.

330ml bottle (2013 vintage, 11%). Dark amber color. Small size, yellowish head, stays. Plums, raisins, sweet, bit of yeast, caramel in aroma. Plums, raisins, signs of alcohol, sweet and caramel in taste. Caramel and raisins in aftertaste. Soft carbonation. Alcohol is there, but kind of hidden. Goes down pretty easy. Very solid brew.

Color: amber/brown color, hazy Foam: frothy, brownish head Smell: caramel, sweet malt, syrup, cola, wood, vanilla, dried fruits, some herbs.. Taste: rather sweet, honey, syrup, caramel, figs.. Velvet texture and amazingly drinkable. Alco well hidden - warms nicely at the end. Marvelously balanced top quality brew difficult to copy their style. Enjoy with different cheeses.
