Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Een mooi moment voor een heerlijk bier. Alles van de Struise is fantastisch.

Pours copper, thick, small cream head with little lacing. Aroma of bread, wood, caramel and toffee. Tastes sweet with some tartness, toffee, caramel, ripe fruit, whiskey, wood and spices. Booze well hidden. Thick and oily, very low carbonation, astringent finish. Tasty and dangerous.

Taste is medium+ sweet, light+ bitter and light+ tart, of dried fruits, raisins, red fruits, red wine, with notes of caramel, vanilla, wood, whisky. Dried fruits, spice in the finish. Medium to full body, oily texture, average carbonation. Very good quad, although a bit too sour for me.

330 mL bottle shared with ebone1988. Got this one from Jorrit. Thanks! The pour is a darker muddy brown with a thin ring of khaki head that falls off quickly. The aroma is interesting. There is a nice dark fruit balance and a sweet maltiness. The bourbon comes in light and finishes a little sharp with a bit of oxidation. The oak works pretty well with a lingering sweetness. The flavor is much of the same. There is a dark fruit and sweet bourbon with a bit of cardboard happening that lets me know this baby is a little past it’s prime. The barrel is light and sweet with a hint of vanilla. The mouth feel is lighter and a touch watery with a soft carbonation and a lingeringly sweet malt and dark fruit with a kiss of bourbon. Interesting and past it’s prime. 7 4 7 4 15

Bottle shared with koleminer20. Vintage 2013. Aroma is bourbon, barrel, vanilla, dark fruit, caramel, boozy, raisins, complex and nice. Appearance is dark brown, light tan head, cloudy. Taste is dark fruit, bourbon, barrel, vanilla, caramel, a little past its prime, it's pretty good though. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, boozy bourbon barrel dark fruit aftertaste. Overall, I'm sure this was very solid about a year ago, Struise does good things.

11%ABV. Quad. Poured out dark brown. 28ºSRM. Nose is sweet, alcoholic, raisins and preserved fruit with sour and sweet. Hint of ume preserves with a sour preserved quality in a pleasing piquant aged cheese way. Mouthfeel is dry. Palate has prune juice,. Plum juice body. Dry woody flavor with hardwoods being most likely. Finish is warming in the throat and chest. As it warms up, the last few sips finish with a hint of cheesy funk. Overall, a pleasant barrel-aged quad that has picked up some nice character from its time in a barrel. Goes on Favorites List!
