UPDATED: DEC 15, 2015 Review from notes. Had it side by side with the regular version. Slightly hazy dark amber color with beige head. Aroma is more simple than the standard version, there is definitely no barrel character. More bitter and effervescent. Stronger belgian character. I definitely preferred the standard version. Aroma is a deep soft fruity caramel. Cant seebcolour properly because of lighting. Taste is heavy cloying sweetness, lightly bitter. full body, creamy, soft carbonation. Long cloying mouth feel.
2012 bottle. Probably too fizzy when younger. Beertobealive (576) - Courbevoie, FRANCE - DEC 6, 2015
Pours a huge (explosive) beige head out of the bottle. Aromas of nuts, raisin, jasmine, blackberry and raspberry. Hazy and brown colored body. Warm in mouth with excellent length and balance, though less complexity than the Bourbon BA.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2013 vintage bottling. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces a to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big golden raisin, plum, fig, apricot, apple, white grape, pepper, toasted oak, red wine, light vanilla, honey, brown sugar, bread, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, port barrel, and moderate malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of big golden raisin, plum, fig, apricot, apple, red grape, pepper, vanilla, toasted oak, red wine, honey, brown sugar, bread, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Moderate amount of earthy yeast spiciness and slight tannic oak on the finish; with lingering notes of golden raisin, plum, fig, apricot, apple, white grape, pepper, vanilla, toasted oak, red wine, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, port barrel, and moderate malt sweetness; with a great sweetness/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and slightly slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged Belgian strong pale ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, port barrel, and moderate malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Corpo pieno, carbonazione media, medio-bassa, oleosa. DrSilverworm (9671) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - NOV 20, 2015
11.2oz bottle, from Dutch’s. 2013 edition, bottled 7/2014. Just arrived this year. Up front, flavor is more like a maltier belgian tripel than a belgian winter ale. Bready, mildly sweet malt, some spicy hop, touch of grape. Port seems kind of mild. Totally hazy orange, slight red amber color. Ring of off-white head, couple loose bits of lace. Moderate bitter taste, light to moderate sweet, touch of warmth pushing the aftertaste into the finish. Bigger body. Lighter, kind of crisp carbonation, with a pretty dry finish. Mild roughness to it. Not as flavorful nor rich as I imagined it would be. Bit dry, bitter. Decent belgian strong ale, but I had much higher hopes for this. Not much really special about it. Some odd mustiness, touch of citrus, hint of wood, bit of bandaid. FlandersNed (395) - , Indiana, USA - NOV 15, 2015
33 cl bottle. Hazy copper-brown tone with a long-lasting beige head. Sour mash, apple & red wine nose. Grainy, initially astringent, aged vinous notes with smooth Belgian strong ale fruitiness and light spice and an earthy, moldy wine cork finish. Mellow malt liquor alcohol character. Full body and medium+ carbonation. Different, but wouldn’t want more than one. Bierridder_S (929) - BELGIUM - NOV 15, 2015
14/11/2015 @home - 33cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck, Vichte.
Hazy amber with nice, quickly fading head. Aroma is boozy, candi sugar, light vinous. Taste is marzipan, caramel, candi sugar, hints of port, but booze is a bit too much. caesar (7133) - Bunnik/Utrecht, NETHERLANDS - NOV 15, 2015
Bottle from Burg Bierwinkel, vintage 2011 BB 26-12-2017, large sample. Hazy amber color, short frothy head. Aroma is spicy, raisins, bit mashed apples, slight red wine, bit cinnamon. In taste again lots of mashed apples, slight alcohol, port wine, spices. Pretty sweet, but also dry from the spices. Quite complex, bit harsh on the alcohol. Interesting stuff.
