Draft at the Old School in March 2013 - Oostvleteren, Belgium. The beer looks great, having poured deep black with a thick, creamy beige head. Ahsy roast in the nose with whisky smoke, burnt cocoa, torched wood. Big sweet flavor with notes of burnt ham, dark sugars, burnt wood and toffee, moderate earthy bitterness. Full bodied with fine carbonation and creamy mouthfeel. Warming finish, sweet, with burnt wood bitterness and gooey dark chocolate. Pint at the Struise store, Bruges. This is like drinking a mix of sweet sherry and a good stout, it sounds an odd combination but it works amazingly well, one of the best beers I’ve ever had. Draft @ ’t Schooltje – thx! for the ride tderoeck! First aged on Sherry barrels & then on Lagavulin – which is absolutely incredible whisky. Pours black with a huge creamy mocha ice-cream head, nice. Nose is very creamy, mocha ice-cream, light roast, nice wood / oak, light peat. Taste & body is super creamy, almost milkshake / liquid ice-cream, very creamy, caramel, thick mocha, chocolate, syrupy, touch molasses, brown sugar, sweet coffee, warming in the finish, almost touch alcohol with light charcoal & perfectly balanced dose of peat – which is a rare thing – great touch. Utterly incredible – I asked for seconds. Best Black Albert variation so far.

Sample at ’het Schooltje’ Oostvleteren. I always imagine that the quality of the beer deteriorates a little because it’s kept for a longer time in the ’tap trailer’. Though amazing idea!
Appearance: pitch black beer, little head.
Nose: very sweet, red fruits, little smoked.

Mid black with a dirty tan head - this looks the bollocks!
Nose is big and bold, chocolate, booze, woody notes, brown sugars, snifter of whisky.
Taste comprises rich chocolate, decent compliment of booze, light coffee, dark fruity twang, brown sugars.
Full bodied, fine carbonation lending towards a boozey sweet finish.
This is what Struise do oh so very well! An excellent imperial stout, great balance, good depth and the 13% ABV is expertly integrated.
